Retail Thanks

Group content in World of Warcraft runs on buffs. A priest drops Power Word: Fortitude, a mage hands out Arcane Intellect, a druid refreshes Mark of the Wild, and everyone quietly benefits. Retail Thanks is a lightweight addon that turns that silent gratitude into an actual thank-you, automatically, the moment a meaningful buff lands on you. No macros, no typing mid-pull, no awkward silence after a stranger saves your run with a well-timed blessing.

What Retail Thanks Actually Does

The addon watches for newly applied or refreshed helpful buffs and thanks the player who cast them. The catch, and it is a smart one, is the duration filter. Retail Thanks only reacts to buffs whose reported duration is strictly greater than 120 seconds. That single rule filters out the noise. Short effects like Renew, quick defensive cooldowns, and throwaway procs never trigger a message, so your chat log stays clean and your thank-yous stay meaningful.

It also knows what to ignore. Self-buffs do not count, because thanking yourself is strange. NPC buffs are skipped. Permanent effects and anything with an unknown duration are left alone, since the addon cannot reason about them. What remains is the real thing: a genuine, long-lasting buff from another player, which deserves recognition.

Eight Messages, No Repeats

Retail Thanks ships with eight varied thank-you messages and rotates through them without repeating the previous random one. The result feels natural instead of robotic. You will not spam the same line five times in a raid night, and the person on the receiving end gets something that reads like a human wrote it.

Whisper is the default delivery method, but you can switch to a thank-you emote instead with /rt mode emote if you prefer your gratitude to be public and performative. Both options work in every supported game version, whether you are playing Retail, Classic, The Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm, or Mists of Pandaria. The addon behaves consistently across all of them.

Commands and Configuration

Everything is driven from chat, which keeps the addon light. The command list is short and memorable:

  • /rt status - shows your settings and session diagnostics
  • /rt on and /rt off - enable or disable automatic whispers
  • /rt preview - displays a sample message locally without whispering anyone
  • /rt groups on and /rt groups off - control whether thanks fire while you are grouped, on by default
  • /rt cooldown 60 - sets a per-player cooldown between 30 and 3600 seconds
  • /rt message Thanks for %s! - sets a custom message where %s becomes the buff name
  • /rt message random - restores the eight rotating default messages
  • /rt debug - toggles local diagnostics for whisper attempts

The per-player cooldown is the feature most players end up loving. It prevents you from thanking the same paladin three times in two minutes when they keep refreshing their blessing, while still letting you acknowledge a different caster immediately. Tune it once and forget it.

How to Install

If you are ready to download Retail Thanks, grab the release ZIP rather than GitHub's source archive, since the source archive will not load correctly. Extract the retailthanks folder into your client's Interface/AddOns directory, then restart the client if it was already open. Enable retailthanks in the AddOns list at character select. The final structure must be Interface/AddOns/retailthanks/retailthanks.toc, so double-check that you did not end up with a nested folder. Finally, disable any other auto-thanks addon to avoid duplicate messages.

If you would rather skip the manual folder juggling entirely, the foxygame.net launcher handles Retail Thanks through a one-click install and keeps it updated automatically, so your addon catalog stays current without you ever touching a ZIP file.

Why It Fits Into Any Playstyle

Retail Thanks is not a performance addon. It will not raise your DPS or fix your rotation. What it does is quietly improve the social texture of group content in a game where buffs are constant and gratitude is rare. A healer who has spent the last ten minutes keeping everyone alive gets a whisper. A random mage in a dungeon finder group gets acknowledged. It costs you nothing and it makes the next run slightly friendlier.

Because it ignores short effects, self-buffs, and unknown durations, it never becomes spam. Because it rotates eight messages, it never becomes repetitive. And because it works across Retail, Classic, TBC, WotLK, Cataclysm, and MoP, you can keep it enabled no matter which version of Azeroth you log into tonight. Install it once, set your cooldown, and let the thank-yous handle themselves.
