SteadyCam

You know the feeling. You spend an evening dialing in the perfect over-the-shoulder action camera, your character sitting just off-center with a clean view of the road ahead. Then you mount up, and everything slides. Your hero drifts toward the middle of the screen, the world lurches sideways, and the framing you liked is gone. Dismount, and it snaps back to something close to your setup but never quite the same. Every race, every mount, every size difference does it by a slightly different amount.

SteadyCam is a World of Warcraft addon that puts an end to that. You decide where your character sits on screen, once, and it stays there. On foot, on a tiny mechanostrider, on a hulking dragon, in the air, on a flight path, through every mount and dismount. The camera stops fighting you.

Why the Camera Moves in the First Place

World of Warcraft scales the shoulder offset based on the size of whatever your character is standing on or riding. Mount a large creature and the game pulls your character toward the center of the screen; hop off and the offset jumps back out. The transition is animated, which is exactly why it reads as a stutter rather than a clean cut. Blizzard never offered a way to pin the framing in place, so players either lived with it or turned the action camera off entirely.

SteadyCam takes a different approach. It knows how the game moves the camera during a mount or dismount and compensates in real time, so there is no sideways jump to see.

What SteadyCam Actually Does

Steady horizontal framing

Your character keeps the same spot on screen whether you are walking, riding, or flying. Slide the control left or right and the live preview shows exactly where you will land.

Vertical framing, split between ground and air

Raise or lower your character on screen, with separate values for walking and flying. Want more sky ahead of you on a long flight path? Set it and forget it.

Smooth transitions

No snap, no drift, no sideways lurch when you summon or dismiss a mount. The compensation happens continuously rather than in a single frame.

Live preview

Two small panels show where your character sits on foot and mounted, matching what you actually see in game. Every slider has arrow buttons for fine steps, and a right-click resets it to default.

Camera turn speed

One slider controls how fast the camera turns with the mouse, from 10 percent to 200 percent of the game default. If you change it in Blizzard's own options, SteadyCam steps aside and dims its slider until you touch it again.

Works Out of the Box

SteadyCam ships with measurements for every playable race, both sexes, and alternate forms including Worgen and Dracthyr visage, plus size estimates for nearly 2,000 mounts. Most players install it, nudge a slider or two, and never think about calibration. If you want a perfect fit on one specific mount, an optional one-click calibration measures it for your character in about a minute. You press a button each time it lights up and the addon handles the rest. Calibrating a single mount also covers every other mount sharing that model.

Shapeshifts and special cases are handled too: Worgen and Dracthyr form changes, Dracthyr Soar, flight paths, and mounts that hide your character entirely. Everything lives in one small window, and no chat commands are required.

Compatibility Across WoW Versions

SteadyCam targets the modern camera system, which means it is built for Retail first and foremost. If you play on Classic Era, The Burning Crusade Classic, Wrath of the Lich King Classic, Cataclysm Classic, or Mists of Pandaria Classic, check the addon's current compatibility notes before you download SteadyCam, since older clients expose a narrower set of camera variables. The core idea, a stable shoulder offset that survives mounting, is the same everywhere it runs.

Getting it running is straightforward. SteadyCam for World of Warcraft installs like any other addon: drop the folder into your Interface/AddOns directory, restart the client, and log in. If you would rather skip the manual folder juggling, the foxygame.net launcher handles the whole thing in a single click, keeping SteadyCam current with every game patch without you hunting down a new build. The first time you log in, the SteadyCam window opens on its own with recommended framing already applied.

Plays Nice With Other Camera Addons

  • Combat Mode: If installed, it hands its turn speed, shoulder offset, dynamic pitch, and motion sickness settings over to SteadyCam. Combat Mode handles combat and mouse look; SteadyCam handles framing.
  • DynamicCam: This one changes the same camera settings, so the two would fight. When DynamicCam is loaded, SteadyCam asks in a game dialog whether to disable it. One click and the interface reloads.
  • Other addons and macros: Anything touching the shoulder offset or dynamic pitch settings will conflict. SteadyCam warns you when that happens and tells you which setting was touched.
  • Motion sickness options: Blizzard's Keep Character Centered and Reduce Camera Motion override the shoulder offset, so SteadyCam turns them off. If you rely on them, enable Motion Sickness Protection in the Advanced section and SteadyCam leaves them alone.

Resetting and Uninstalling

Camera settings are saved by the game itself, not by the addon, which makes cleanup painless. "Restore Blizzard camera" returns everything to the game's own defaults, "Recommended values" brings back SteadyCam's setup, and "Save my preferences" and "Load my preferences" let you keep your own configuration. Before removing the addon, flip the switch at the top of the window: your camera goes back to exactly how it was before SteadyCam ever touched it.

The Bottom Line

The action camera is one of the best things Blizzard added to World of Warcraft, and the mounting stutter is the one flaw that keeps people from using it. SteadyCam fixes that flaw without asking you to learn a scripting language or babysit a config file. Set your framing once, ride off, and enjoy a camera that finally stays where you put it.
