Truly Dark
Vanilla Minecraft has a dirty secret: its nights aren't actually dark. Stand outside at midnight under a full moon and you'll see a glowing blue sky gradient, a softly lit cloud layer, and a gray horizon band that betrays every mountain silhouette from half a kilometer away. Torches feel optional. Lanterns feel decorative. The game calls it "night," but it plays like a slightly blue afternoon.
Truly Dark fixes that. This mod turns the lights off, layer by layer, so that when the game says it's dark, it actually is. Caves become genuinely black except for what you light yourself. Overworld nights feel like nights. The sky dome, the fog band, and the cloud plane all drop together, which means torches matter, lanterns matter, and seeing something in the distance matters again. If you've ever placed a torch by instinct and watched it illuminate nothing because the ambient sky was already doing that job for you, this mod was made for that exact moment.
What Truly Dark Actually Darkens
The mod reworks every layer of the "night sky looks bright" problem, independently. You get real cave darkness through a reworked lightmap that makes unlit areas black instead of dusty blue. The sky dome gradient drops with the day/night curve down to your configured floor. The horizon fog band scales in lockstep so you don't get a lit gray strip under a black sky. Clouds dim with the sky so they're not floating glow sheets at midnight. The sun, moon, and stars have alpha that scales with sky darkness — a full moon still lights things, a new moon barely does. There are even separate sliders for Nether and End fog.
All of it is moon-phase-aware and weather-aware out of the box. New-moon midnight in the open becomes the darkest time of the game, not a slightly blue afternoon.
Three Presets, Three Vibes
On first launch, you pick the feel you want. The "Dark Caves Only" preset makes caves black but leaves the night sky unchanged, with the moon still helping. The "Darker" preset darkens caves to black, reduces the night sky to about 50% of vanilla, and keeps a reduced moon contribution. The "Truly Dark" preset makes caves black, the night sky near-pitch-black, and ignores the moon entirely. All three are one click, and you can fine-tune any slider afterwards. If you want to see the picker again, reset setup_version=Auto in the config file.
Fine Control When You Want It
Every layer has its own 0.0 to 1.0 floor slider, where 0.0 is effectively black at peak darkness and 1.0 is vanilla. The sliders include sky_darkness for the dome above you, fog_darkness for the band at the horizon, cloud_darkness for the cloud plane, moon_phase_intensity for how much the moon contributes to the night, and dark_nether_fog / dark_end_fog for per-dimension fog. There are per-dimension master toggles for the Overworld, Nether, End, modded sky, and modded skyless dimensions. A biome blacklist handles mods that ship their own lit-cave biomes — Alex's Caves Primordial Caves and Candy Cavity are pre-populated and harmless when the mod isn't installed. You can reach all of this in-game from ModMenu on Fabric or Quilt, or the Mods screen on Forge or NeoForge, and it persists to config/trulydark.properties.
Compatibility and How to Install
Truly Dark for Minecraft supports Forge, NeoForge, Fabric, and Quilt on both Minecraft 1.20.1 and 1.21.1. It is client-only in function, with no server-side gameplay changes. It's dedicated-server safe, shipping with gated initializers so the jar can sit on a server for mod-list parity without touching rendering code. It's multiplayer-safe with no packets or protocol changes. There are no extra dependencies besides Fabric API on Fabric or Quilt.
To install, download Truly Dark and drop the matching JAR into your mods folder. That's it. If you're using the foxygame.net launcher, you'll find that its add-on catalog handles the whole process for you — you can search for Truly Dark, hit one-click install, and the launcher manages the correct version and loader automatically, so you never have to worry about mismatched JARs or missing dependencies.
About Shaders
Shader mods replace Minecraft's entire lighting pipeline. When a shader pack is active, Truly Dark's effects can potentially be bypassed, and there's no way around that from the mod's side without the mod author and the pack author working together on a GLSL and shaders.properties snippet. That said, some shader packs are actually compatible natively. Simple packs like Sildur's Lite, default-configured BSL, and vanilla-plus do something like color *= texture2D(lightmap, lmcoord), which samples the darkened pixels and lets the effect come through for free. Heavy packs that reconstruct ambient from scratch don't. It's pack-dependent, so try it out for yourself. The config screen detects Iris or Oculus and shows a warning. To get the same feel under a shader, open your shader pack's own settings and set Cave Darkness / Cave Lighting to 0 and Night Brightness / Moonlight Strength to 0.
For Modpack Creators and Server Owners
Truly Dark supports modpack creators in several ways. The config file has in-depth explanations for features, forced mod requirements for dedicated servers, and modpack author user config hard disables to prevent players messing with settings in packs where you have an intended vision. It ships user-first but can be configured to be modpack-first or server-first with little to no technical knowledge. If you're running a modpack through the foxygame.net launcher, its version compatibility checks will ensure Truly Dark loads cleanly alongside your other mods, and auto-updates keep everyone on the same build without manual file swapping.
What Truly Dark Is Not
This is not a horror mod — it doesn't add mobs, jumpscares, or events. It's not a shader — it works without shaders and doesn't try to compete with them. It's not a server-side gameplay change — other players see their own vanilla world. It's not aggressive — every layer is tuneable, there are three built-in presets, and one-click opt-out is always available.
Truly Dark just makes the game darker when the game says it's dark. Turn the lights off. Keep the game on.
