MafiX
Running a game of Mafia on a Minecraft server used to mean one person sitting out to narrate, juggling timers, and hoping nobody peeked at night. MafiX changes that completely. It is a Paper plugin that runs a full game of Mafia from start to finish without a live host, so everyone gets to play. An admin builds a room with chairs and registers it once, and after that the arena runs itself: players press a button, take a seat at the table, and the plugin handles the rest.
What Makes MafiX Stand Out
Most social deduction setups rely on a human moderator, which is exactly where things fall apart. People disconnect, arguments drag on, and the host gets burned out. MafiX for Minecraft removes that weak point entirely and replaces it with a set of features that feel polished rather than improvised.
- Voiced host. Two narrator voices, each with its own personality, guide the game. The lobby host picks a voice before the game starts, and by default one is chosen at random.
- Fair nights. Sleeping players receive no data about other players from the server, so peeking is impossible even with cheats. This is a genuine anti-cheat measure, not a cosmetic one.
- Chat voting. Player lists are clickable, votes can be changed, and results update in real time. No counting hands or shouting over voice chat.
- Simple Voice Chat support. Microphones are enabled only during discussion and last words, which keeps the night phase tense and quiet.
- Item safety. Before the game, each player's inventory, XP, effects, and position are saved to a file. Items are returned even after a server crash, which matters a lot on busy public servers.
- Built-in resource pack. Sounds, music, and visuals are served by the plugin itself, so no separate hosting is needed.
One thing to know up front: voice acting and in-game texts are in Russian by default. If that is a dealbreaker for your community, messages can be translated in messages.yml, though the recorded narrator audio stays as it is.
Supported Versions and Loader
MafiX is built for the Paper server platform, which means it works on Paper and Paper-derived forks such as Purpur. It targets modern Minecraft releases, and the current build ships as MafiX-1.0.jar. Because it relies on Paper's plugin API rather than a mod loader, players do not need to install anything client-side beyond an optional voice chat mod. If you run a mixed-version network, keep the plugin on the same Minecraft version as your server core to avoid command and resource pack quirks.
If you would rather skip manual file juggling, the foxygame.net launcher is worth a look: it keeps a curated add-on catalog where MafiX sits alongside other server-side tools, so you can add it to a profile without touching a single JAR file by hand.
How to Install MafiX
Step 1: Drop the Plugin In
Place MafiX-1.0.jar into the plugins/ folder and start the server. Optionally install Simple Voice Chat so the game can control microphones automatically.
Step 2: Handle the Resource Pack
The plugin serves its own pack on port 8090. For local or LAN testing, nothing needs configuring. On a public server, open TCP port 8090 in your firewall or hosting panel, then set your server's public IP or domain in config.yml under resource-pack. After that, run /mafia reload. If the port is unreachable, players will not receive the pack and will be removed from the lobby.
Hosts that cannot open extra ports, such as Aternos, can host the pack externally instead. Grab plugins/MafiX/pack/MafiX-pack.zip after the first start, upload it somewhere that gives a direct download link, then set resource-pack.mode: url along with the URL and SHA-1 in the config.
Step 3: Build and Register the Arena
Construct a room with a table, stairs as chairs around it, and a button for joining. Then register it with a short command chain: /mafia arena create, sethologram above the table center, setbutton while looking at the button, and addseat for each stair in order, since that order becomes player numbering. Set a minimum player count with setmin and finish with enable. Note that any change to positions disables the arena, so you will need to enable it again afterward.
Playing a Round
Players press the button and take a seat. The first player becomes the lobby host and receives a settings item to choose roles, the number of mafia members, timers, and the narrator voice. Once enough players have joined, the game starts automatically. Commands are simple: /mafia leave for everyone, and /mafia arena, /mafia stop, and /mafia reload for operators. The alias /mafix works too.
So if you want to download MafiX and turn a quiet corner of your server into a proper social deduction night, the setup cost is a one-time arena build and a port rule. After that, the plugin does the hosting, the timing, and the bookkeeping, and your players just argue about who was acting suspicious. That is exactly how Mafia should feel.
