Light Level Overlay
Torch placement in Minecraft is usually guesswork. You slap down a light source, squint at a dark corner, and hope nothing spawns behind your storage room. The Light Level Overlay add-on removes the guesswork entirely by painting light values directly onto block faces, so you always know exactly where hostile mobs can appear.
What Light Level Overlay Does
This client-side mod renders numbers from 0 to 15 on every block, colored by danger. Blocks at light level 0 to 7 glow red because mobs can spawn there at any time. Levels 8 and above show green, marking them as safe. The overlay also distinguishes block light from sky light, which matters when you are building a base near the surface or digging deep underground.
Because everything happens on your client, you can join any server without asking the admin to install anything. That makes Light Level Overlay for Minecraft a handy companion for survival worlds, skyblock islands, and multiplayer realms alike.
Four Display Modes for Every Playstyle
Press Shift+F7 to cycle through the display modes, each tuned for a different job.
- Cross Mode: A red X marks dangerous blocks, a yellow X marks blocks that are only safe during the day, and safe blocks stay clean. Minimal and easy on the eyes.
- Minimal Mode: Red numbers from 0 to 7 appear only on blocks in the danger zone. Perfect for a quick check without visual clutter.
- Standard Mode: Numbers 0 to 15 on every block, red for 0 to 7 and green for 8 to 15. A full light level readout colored by value.
- Advanced Mode: Numbers 0 to 15 with color based on spawn danger rather than raw value, separating block light from sky light sources.
The numbers themselves are custom pixel-art digits, chunky 5x7 bitmap glyphs rendered as colored quads on block faces. They are bold, readable, and far sharper than vanilla font text floating in the world.
Controls and Settings
F7 toggles the overlay on and off. Shift+F7 cycles the four display modes. A settings screen, reachable from the mod list, lets you adjust render distance and other options, with a slider that stretches up to 512 blocks for large builds.
If you would rather skip manual file wrangling, the foxygame.net launcher offers a one-click install path that drops Light Level Overlay straight into your mod profile and keeps it updated automatically.
Supported Versions and Loaders
Light Level Overlay is built for NeoForge and targets modern Minecraft releases, so it fits naturally into current modpacks. If you run an older setup, check the project page for the exact Minecraft version your loader supports before you download Light Level Overlay, since the mod tracks the NeoForge release cycle closely.
Modpack creators are welcome to include it. The license permits redistribution, and the mod stays lightweight because it only touches rendering.
How to Install
Getting started takes a few minutes.
- Install a compatible NeoForge version for your Minecraft release.
- Place the mod file in your mods folder.
- Launch the game and load a world.
- Press F7 to toggle the overlay and Shift+F7 to pick a mode.
That is the whole process. No server-side setup, no config editing required unless you want to tweak render distance.
Why Players Keep It Installed
Most light overlay mods show plain numbers. This one adds danger-aware coloring, time-of-day-accurate sky light, and a render distance that reaches far beyond the default. The custom pixel-art rendering keeps everything legible even in busy redstone builds or crowded caves.
Whether you are lighting a mob farm, sealing a villager hall, or just tired of creepers appearing in your hallway, Light Level Overlay gives you the information at a glance. Install it once, and you will wonder how you ever placed torches without it.
