Firmament
Firmament is a shaderpack by PozziTiv4ik that keeps Minecraft's familiar look while adding natural light, clear water, and a stronger sense of atmosphere. It works with the original block textures, so you do not need a resource pack to see the difference. Pick a preset, load your world, and enjoy the view.
What Firmament Changes in Your World
The pack focuses on mood rather than a total visual overhaul. Soft sunlight and moonlight, gentle shadows, and light filtering through leaves give the Overworld a calmer feel. Volumetric clouds, stars, atmospheric fog, and shafts of light add depth to the sky, while reflective water above the surface and a clear view from underwater make coastlines and oceans far more inviting.
Moving plants, wet surfaces, and warm light from torches and other blocks bring small details to life. Automatic exposure, subtle bloom, and smoother edges round out the image. Each dimension gets its own character: sunlit coasts in the Overworld, glowing forests in the Nether, and a distinct mood for the distant islands of the End.
Presets and Performance
Firmament ships with three presets so you can find your balance. Balanced lowers the cost of the effects, High is the recommended starting point, and Ultra raises quality settings when you have room to spare. The options are available in English and Russian, which makes tweaking straightforward for a wider audience.
Supported Minecraft Versions and Loaders
Version 0.11 expanded compatibility to 29 Minecraft Java versions. A single ZIP adapts materials automatically for 1.18.2; 1.19, 1.19.1, 1.19.2, and 1.19.4; 1.20 through 1.20.6; 1.21 through 1.21.11; and 26.1, 26.1.1, 26.1.2, 26.2, and 26.3. Use matching Iris and Sodium builds for the best results. Additional versions await in-game validation, and Fabric support is still pending game tests.
The gameplay baseline is Minecraft Java 1.21.1 with NeoForge 21.1.228, Iris 1.8.12, and Sodium 0.6.13. On Minecraft 26.2 and 26.3, use the OpenGL renderer. OptiFine, ray tracing, PBR materials, Distant Horizons, and Voxy integration are not included.
How to Install Firmament for Minecraft
Getting started takes only a few minutes. First, install compatible Iris and Sodium versions in your Minecraft instance. Then place the Firmament ZIP in the shaderpacks folder and keep it zipped. Open Video Settings, go to Shader Packs, select Firmament, and start with the High preset.
- Install Iris and Sodium for your Minecraft version.
- Drop the Firmament ZIP into the shaderpacks folder without extracting it.
- Open Video Settings and choose Shader Packs.
- Select Firmament and begin with High.
- Adjust to Balanced or Ultra depending on your hardware.
The pack runs on your client, so a server does not need to install it. If you want a faster route, the foxygame.net launcher offers a one-click install for Firmament, placing the ZIP in the correct folder and matching it with the right Iris and Sodium builds automatically. That saves you from hunting down individual files for each version.
What to Expect in Practice
Scene reflections use what is visible to the camera, so off-screen objects can be missing from reflections. Complex waterlogged blocks and overlapping transparent surfaces can still show artifacts, and underwater reflections are deliberately disabled to keep the view through the surface clear. These are known trade-offs rather than bugs.
If you want proof before installing, the gallery compares Minecraft without shaders on the left and Firmament on the right. Every image is a real gameplay screenshot captured by the author with the High preset, combined without color grading or generated image enhancements. The pictured 0.10-alpha.2 build and release 0.11 share the same GLSL rendering code; the release adds version-dependent block materials.
Final Thoughts
Firmament is a focused shaderpack that respects vanilla textures while giving every dimension a stronger identity. It is released under the MIT license, and the editable GLSL sources are included in the ZIP, which is a nice touch for anyone who likes to tinker. Note that this shaderpack is unrelated to the Hypixel SkyBlock mod with the same name. If you want natural light, clear water, and a familiar Minecraft world with more atmosphere, download Firmament and see the difference for yourself.
