Celestial: The Dreamy Night-Sky Shader Pack That Transforms Minecraft
Most shader packs promise better sunsets and move on. Celestial goes further, rebuilding the night sky into something worth waiting for. Built for Fabric with Iris and Sodium, and for Forge with Oculus and Embeddium on Minecraft 1.20.1 and newer, this pack layers coloured lighting, coloured shadows and an optional ray tracing mode on top of a sky full of constellations, a glowing comet and cosmic events that turn ordinary nights into a spectacle.
RTX-Style Ray Tracing With One Switch
The headline feature is the ray tracing mode, and it is genuinely a night-and-day difference. Open Shader Options and enable Ray Tracing to switch Celestial into a ray-traced shader. It sits off by default because it demands Iris 1.6 or newer and a strong graphics card, but with it disabled the pack looks and performs exactly as it always did.
Once active, rays are traced through the actual blocks around you. Rooms and caves are lit only by the sky they can genuinely see through their windows, doors and roof openings, plus whatever light bounces in. Sunlight carries the colour of every surface it touches: a sunny floor lights the room behind the window, grass throws green light up into the trees, and a red wall tints everything facing it. Glowing blocks become real lights with soft shadows and their own coloured pools, while bounced light spreads that colour further. Polished quartz, glazed terracotta, ice and metal blocks gain ray-traced reflections that mirror glowing blocks and coloured light, even ones behind you. Everything else stays matte, and the effect is smoothed over time so the lighting stays clean as you move. Rays per pixel and ray length are both adjustable.
Real Coloured Lighting and Shadows
Light finally has colour. Soul torches glow cyan, redstone glows red, amethyst and crying obsidian glow purple, and copper torches burn lime green while copper bulbs give a warm amber glow. Stained glass colours the light passing through it, so red glass over one lamp and blue over another mix into purple where the beams meet. Line a room with soul lanterns and the walls, floor and ceiling glow blue like LED strips. Hold a coloured light and it lights your way in that colour.
Shadows get the same treatment. Sunlight and moonlight passing through stained glass, ice, slime or honey take on its colour, throwing vivid patches across the floor while god rays stream through in matching hues.
A Sky Worth Staying Up For
Above all that sits a deep blue-black sky packed with fine twinkling stars, a violet Milky Way with dark dust lanes, spiral galaxies and soft nebulae. A round glowing pixel moon keeps the classic Minecraft charm, with vanilla and realistic moon options available. Shooting stars streak past on clear nights.
- Comet Tiamat: a huge comet fixed across the sky with a white-hot edge, an electric cyan and blue tail and soft violet-pink clouds, appearing one night in ten by default
- Constellations: blue lines with glowing stars, seven themes, and names that appear in pixel letters when you look at them
- Cosmic Events: Meteor Storm, Star Vortex, Cosmic Bloom and Supernova, each lasting until dawn and visible to everyone on the same world
- The End: rebuilt around a colossal black hole with a blazing violet photon ring and a golden accretion disk you can stand on
Lakes turn into near-perfect mirrors of the night sky, with stars becoming fine stardust in the water. By day, water shows real colour, waves and refraction. Warm nostalgic sunlight turns golden through the afternoon, and on rare evenings a green flash lights the horizon the moment the sun disappears.
Installing Celestial
Getting started is straightforward. Install Iris and Sodium for Fabric, or Oculus and Embeddium for Forge, matching your Minecraft version. Then download Celestial and drop the .zip straight into your shaderpacks folder without unzipping it. In game, head to Options, then Video Settings, then Shader Packs, and select Celestial.
If you would rather skip the manual steps, the foxygame.net launcher handles the whole process for you, installing Celestial and keeping it updated automatically whenever a new build lands. Every option inside Shader Options has a tooltip, and the Low, Medium, High and Ultra profiles make it easy to match the pack to your PC. Too dark at night? Raise Lighting, Moonlight or Night Exposure. Low FPS? Try the Medium profile or disable God Rays and Screen Space Reflections.
Final Thoughts
Celestial is one of those rare shader packs that changes how you play rather than just how the game looks. The coloured lighting alone makes bases feel alive, the ray tracing mode delivers a genuine visual leap for capable hardware, and the night sky gives you an actual reason to stop and look up. Whether you want a subtle upgrade or a full cosmic overhaul, this pack is worth the install.
