FakeFriendAI: The Minecraft Mod That Wears Your Friend's Face
A stranger hides among your friends. It wears a friend's face, a friend's name, and speaks in your friend's own recorded voice. FakeFriendAI is not a typical horror mod that spawns a monster in a dark cave. It is a psychological experience built on the unsettling idea that the person walking beside you might not be who they claim to be.
This is an alpha release. It works, it is played, and it will still have bugs, including ones that show up mid-game: an impostor that gets stuck, a voice clip that does not play, or a Purge Night that behaves oddly. Nothing here can corrupt your world, but do not put this on a server you are not willing to restart. A bug you report gets fixed; one you quietly uninstall over does not.
What FakeFriendAI Does
The mimic copies a player who is online right now, taking their username, armour, and the item in their hand. Health-bar mods read it as friendly and green. It walks at a player's exact walking speed of 4.317 blocks per second, fells trees, mines, and places blocks. Every few seconds it picks up a chore. It does not meet your eyes.
When it turns, an iron axe appears in its hand, its health snaps back to full, and it screams using the loudest real recording it has of the person it is pretending to be. An angry mimic cannot be killed, except on one night.
How to Install FakeFriendAI for Minecraft
Before you download FakeFriendAI, understand the requirements. The mod targets Minecraft 26.2 and runs on the Fabric loader, specifically Fabric Loader 0.19.3+, Fabric API 0.160.0+, and Java 25. Both the client and server need the jar. It also requires Simple Voice Chat, which is not bundled, so you must install it yourself. Without it, the mod loads but the impostor is mute, which defeats most of the purpose.
If you want a simpler path, the foxygame.net launcher handles the whole setup for you, offering FakeFriendAI in its add-on catalog so you can install it with a single click and skip manual file juggling. The launcher also keeps versions aligned automatically, which matters here because FakeFriendAI is strict about its Minecraft 26.2 and Fabric API requirements.
Voice Recording and Consent
FakeFriendAI records short clips of what players say in Simple Voice Chat so the impostor can speak in a real player's voice. Nothing is recorded without consent. Every player who joins sees a screen explaining this and must press Confirm. Decline and you are not recorded, and on a dedicated server you are not let in, because a player the impostor cannot copy breaks the game for everyone else.
Recordings never leave the machine. They live on the server or in your own world folder in singleplayer and are never uploaded anywhere. The server owner controls retention, choosing 14, 30, 90 days, or forever, and any player's voice can be erased completely.
The Purge Night
Between the 10th and 15th day of the world, and every 10 to 15 days after, the moon comes up wrong. Chat announces that the moon is not right tonight. Time jumps to sunset and a second, blood-red moon rises. Render distance drops to four chunks, chat is disabled, and voice becomes the only way to talk. Every living player gets two pale copies of themselves hunting somebody else. This is the one night a mimic can be killed.
Pay close attention and you will notice a warning. A month before, a lone figure appears at the edge of the render distance, simply standing still. Approach it and it walks away. Then, one day before the fateful night, they all leave, announced in chat.
The Optional AI
The impostor can hold a conversation, hearing you and picking the recording that answers. This needs a small language model and is entirely optional. Without it the mod still works; the impostor just speaks at random. If enabled, it downloads between 1.4 and 2.2 GB once, runs locally, and works offline afterward.
Final Thoughts
FakeFriendAI is a bold, unsettling experiment that turns trust into a mechanic. It does not synthesise speech, does not send your voice anywhere, and does not touch world generation or recipes. It is made by one person, and if it scared you, that is the best thanks. Download FakeFriendAI, gather at least two players, and find out whether you can spot the stranger wearing your friend's face.
