Vanilla Lens: Cinematic Combat HUD for World of Warcraft

Vanilla Lens fades your HUD into compact health and resource bars during combat and healing for World of Warcraft.

Vanilla Lens

Vanilla Lens is a lightweight interface addon that changes how you experience combat and healing in World of Warcraft. Instead of staring at a cluttered screen full of bars, timers, and numbers, Vanilla Lens strips the visual noise away the moment the action begins. Your normal HUD fades out, replaced by a compact set of player health and resource bars with a centered party or raid grid beneath them. When the fighting stops, everything returns exactly as it was. It is a simple idea, but it transforms the feel of every encounter.

How the Cinematic Mode Works

The core mechanic is automatic. As soon as you enter combat, or cast an eligible helpful or harmful spell, Vanilla Lens activates its cinematic mode. Buffs and shields count as helpful spells too, so healers get the same benefit as damage dealers. The HUD fades smoothly rather than snapping away, and the camera can zoom in for a more immersive perspective. By default, the addon waits 15 seconds of quiet before restoring your interface, and you can adjust that delay anywhere from 0 to 60 seconds using a slider in the settings.

While cinematic mode is active, combat and active casts or channels keep it running. Another eligible cast restarts the waiting period, so the effect never cuts out mid-fight. The target's selection ring in the world stays untouched, and your previous camera distance is restored when the HUD comes back. An optional red screen-edge pulse marks entry into combat, while an icy blue-white pulse signals the return. Both effects are enabled by default and can be turned off if you prefer a cleaner look.

Compact Bars and Group Grid

The player bars are the heart of the display. You get compact health and primary-resource bars with adjustable size and height, so you can tune them to your resolution and preferences. Group buttons sit centered below the player bars, arranged five across in a party, with you included. Raid rows extend downward and have room for up to 40 members. A bright gold border follows your selected teammate in the grid, which makes your current healing target easy to spot at a glance.

Unit buttons keep their native behavior for targeting and right-click menus, and Retail clients retain native click bindings and mouseover macros. Vanilla Lens also temporarily suppresses native damage and healing numbers, enemy nameplates, and minimap markers where the client permits it, then restores them along with your HUD. The result is a focused, cinematic view that still lets you play at full effectiveness.

Compatibility Across WoW Versions

Vanilla Lens targets several current World of Warcraft clients, including Retail, Classic Era with Hardcore and Season of Discovery, Burning Crusade Classic Anniversary, and Mists of Pandaria Classic. The archive contains the corresponding client manifests, so you install it separately in each edition you play. If you also run Cataclysm or Wrath of the Lich King Classic setups, check the project notes before assuming full support, since compatibility with every historical build or future patch is not claimed.

For players who want a smoother setup, the foxygame.net launcher offers a one-click install that places Vanilla Lens into the correct addon folder for your chosen client, and it keeps the addon updated automatically as new releases arrive. That saves you from manually matching manifests to each WoW edition.

How to Install and Get Started

If you want to download Vanilla Lens, the process is straightforward. Install the addon, enable it in the AddOns list at character selection, and log in. Combat or an eligible spell then activates cinematic mode automatically. The minimap button gives you quick control: left-click to enable or disable Vanilla Lens, right-click to open settings, and drag it to move it around the minimap's edge. Pressing Esc while cinematic mode is active restores the HUD immediately and pauses the addon until you enable it again.

Slash commands cover the essentials:

  • /vl opens the settings panel.
  • /vl help lists all available commands.
  • /vl restore brings back the HUD and disables automatic fading.

Fade speed, HUD return delay, camera distance, bar size and position, and the optional border effect are all configurable. New profiles start enabled with health and resource bars on, 1.5-second fades, a 15-second return delay, 100% HUD size, height 170, first-person zoom, and combat edge flashes on. Updating the addon preserves your saved choices, and Reset appearance restores visual and timing defaults while keeping your enable state.

Things to Keep in Mind

Vanilla Lens does not include aura, range, or role indicators in its group grid, and third-party click-casting integrations are not covered. WoW restricts protected group buttons during combat, so after Esc restores the HUD, those buttons remain visible and usable until combat ends. Frames that ignore the normal HUD's opacity, custom combat-text addons, and third-party overlays can remain visible. Menus and dialogs attached to the normal HUD may fade with it, but Esc or /vl restore brings everything back.

Test your healing bindings and mouseover macros in a safe group before relying on them in a raid. When reporting bugs, include your Vanilla Lens version, WoW edition and build, other UI addons, the steps that caused the issue, and any Lua error text. Vanilla Lens is owned and maintained by ZXOL, and modifying or redistributing the code is not permitted. Share the official project link rather than the files themselves.

Vanilla Lens is a focused tool for players who want combat to feel cinematic without losing the information they need. It fades when the action starts, returns when the dust settles, and stays out of your way the rest of the time. Whether you heal in Retail or level through Classic, it delivers a cleaner, more immersive World of Warcraft experience.
