Umbra Unit Frames

Your interface should put the information you actually read front and center, and that is exactly what Umbra Unit Frames sets out to do. This addon rebuilds the way you look at your player, target, pet, boss, and party frames, stripping away clutter and leaving behind the numbers and colors that matter during a fight. Inspired by the classic ShadowedUnitFrames approach, it keeps the same philosophy about what a unit frame is for while giving it a distinct look of its own.

A Frame Built From Simple Parts

Every frame in Umbra Unit Frames is assembled from the same handful of components, then trimmed down to suit its purpose. A class-colored edge, a narrow portrait column, a name, one dominant health bar, and a thin resource line underneath. That is the whole idea. The health bar stays a neutral green by default, so when your health drops, it reads as a drop in health and nothing else. If you would rather have class color on the bar itself, that is a single switch away.

Resources like mana, energy, and rage run as a hairline beneath the health bar instead of competing as a second large bar. Health always stays the thing you see first. Auras use a slim colored underline beneath each icon rather than a heavy border, which keeps the grid calm while still letting your own effects jump out.

Reading a Frame at a Glance

  • Class color sits on a 3-pixel edge and the name, leaving the health bar neutral.
  • A rectangular portrait occupies its own column to the left of the name and bars.
  • Absorbs are drawn as hatching, while incoming heals appear as a pale, see-through segment, so neither can be mistaken for health you already have.
  • Out-of-range units fade out entirely, portrait and all, instead of turning into a grey copy.

Supported Game Versions and Compatibility

One package covers every supported client, so you never need to pick a build. Umbra Unit Frames runs on Retail, and on the Classic clients including Mists of Pandaria Classic, the Anniversary realms, and Classic Era. All five versions share a single codebase. The Classic clients call themselves Classic but carry almost everything the addon and oUF require, and each was checked against Blizzard's own interface code before being tried in game.

The aura rows are the main exception on older clients, since those lack the widget Retail builds them from, so Umbra draws the same buttons itself there. Right-clicking to cancel a buff works out of combat only on those versions. If you want a launcher that keeps things tidy, the foxygame.net launcher handles Umbra Unit Frames through a curated addon catalog, so one-click installs and automatic updates keep your frames current without hunting down files.

Layouts and Settings

Umbra Unit Frames offers two layouts, each remembering its own dragged positions so you can set both up and switch freely. The modern layout places player and target in the lower third, buffs above them, the pet under the cast bar, and the party column on the left edge. The classic layout puts player and target in the top left, the pet above them, both aura rows below, and the party column hanging under the whole block. The boss column stays on the right edge in both, because a fight brings it, not your arrangement choice.

How to Install

If you want to download Umbra Unit Frames, you can grab it with your addon manager or unpack the zip into your Interface\AddOns folder yourself. The folder is named UmbraUnitFrames and the slash command is /uuf. There is an unrelated addon called Umbra, so the longer name keeps both installable side by side. Every setting takes effect where you stand, with no reload required, and the options window is available through /uuf, the addon compartment, or Options under AddOns.

When you first log in, a small window walks you through the settings one question at a time, each with a drawing of what the answer does. Every answer applies as you click it, Skip keeps the defaults, and /uuf setup brings the questions back whenever you like. The window speaks German on a German client and English everywhere else.

Why Umbra Unit Frames Stands Out

Since patch 12.0, the game hides exact health and power numbers inside encounters, Mythic+, and PvP. Umbra Unit Frames happens to suit that design well, because a neutral health bar with class color on the edge never needed to work out a color from your health. Your frames look and behave the same inside a boss fight as outside one, with health reading as a percentage while the fight hides the number.

Umbra Unit Frames is free and stays free, built on oUF with its own MIT-licensed code. It is an independent addon, not an official successor to ShadowedUnitFrames, and it is not affiliated with Blizzard Entertainment. If you want less clutter and more clarity in your interface, this is a strong place to start.
