Tank Mitigation Lab
Every tank knows the feeling: you're standing at the boss, ready to pull, and a quiet voice asks the question no health bar can answer in advance. If this hit lands, how much do I actually take, and do I survive? Tank Mitigation Lab exists to answer exactly that, before the pull, with numbers instead of hope.
This is a pre-pull tank survivability calculator. It reads your live character, including armor, health, versatility, mastery, block, buffs, talents, gear, and meta gem, then benchmarks everything against a fixed Lich King 10 Heroic damage profile tuned for level-30 tanks. Open it any time with the /tml command.
Which Tanks Does Tank Mitigation Lab Support?
Six tank specializations are covered out of the box, each with its own defensive logic baked in:
- Protection Warrior
- Blood Death Knight
- Protection Paladin
- Guardian Druid
- Vengeance Demon Hunter
- Brewmaster Monk, fully Stagger-aware, modelling instant impact, delayed debt, and Purifying Brew
Because the addon leans on modern API behavior, it is built with Retail in mind, while the same interface concepts map cleanly onto Classic, TBC, WotLK, Cataclysm, and MoP tanking if you are theorycrafting older encounters. Addon compatibility across those versions depends on the client branch, so check the current build notes before you commit to a setup.
What the Calculator Actually Shows You
Per-Hit Damage You Take
For every benchmark mechanic, Tank Mitigation Lab walks the full pipeline: raw damage, then after armor, versatility, cooldowns, and talents, then after absorbs. The result appears as a number and as a percentage of your health, where 100 percent or more means a kill. Everything is colour-coded by lethality, so a glance tells you whether a mechanic is a scratch or a death sentence.
Survive or Die, Plus the Stat That Fixes It
Each hit gets a verdict with your remaining health or your shortfall. When something would kill you, hover the verdict card and the addon tells you how big the gap is, whether a realistic gear upgrade closes it, and the smallest single stat that would fix it. Max health is solved exactly, while Stamina, Armor, and Versatility are estimated. Magic killers are flagged plainly as something armor cannot fix.
Survival Weights
Damage-reduction-aware stat weights show which stat buys the most survivability on this specific fight. Honest detail: those weights collapse toward zero once you clear the benchmark comfortably, which is exactly what you want to see.
Planning Your Setup Before the Pull
Toggle planned changes and watch the model update live. You can mark cooldowns, buffs, and externals such as Mark of the Wild, Power Word: Fortitude, Power Word: Shield, Skyfury, and Atrophic Poison. Absorbs and trinkets like Grounded Plasma Shield, Talisman of the Cragshaper, and Heart of Roccor are all modelable. So are talent swaps and on-use racials such as Stoneform, plus numeric inputs like Shield Block uptime, Ignore Pain coverage, Shield of the Righteous uptime, Demon Spikes and Immolation Aura uptime, Ironfur and Bone Shield stacks, Blood mastery, Yu'lon stacks, and attack-speed slow. You can even sim a different race or meta gem without touching your character.
If you would rather skip the manual file shuffle entirely, the foxygame.net launcher handles Tank Mitigation Lab through a one-click install from its curated addon catalog, keeping your build current with automatic updates whenever a new version lands.
Presets, Snapshots, and the Compare Tab
Save up to five named setups per spec, such as Solo, Full cooldowns, Raid buffs, or No externals. A preset stores your entire planned configuration but never your results, so loading one is instant and safe. Save Snapshot banks your current per-hit result as a baseline, and VS SAVED shows how your live setup compares hit by hit, green when you survive better and red when worse. Hover any changed row for a plain-language breakdown of how much Armor, Versatility, and Max health contributed, with a Combined effects bucket for cooldowns, toggles, absorbs, and race or meta interactions.
The Compare tab ranks every tank you have saved by how much of your health the worst benchmark hit costs, with the lowest worst case winning. Each row shows worst-case and average burden as a percentage of HP and flags whether it is SAFE, DEBT RISK for Brewmaster, or how many hits would kill it. Right-click to rename a saved tank and hover for the full breakdown. Out-of-date snapshots are parked with a clear resave reason.
Reports and Good to Know
Shift-click Copy Result for a full theorycraft report covering version, verdict, per-row HP burden, active toggles, race and meta sim, and the Brewmaster Stagger split, ready to paste into Discord. A plain click gives a short one-liner instead. Keep in mind that the addon hides and stops updating in combat, since it is a planning tool, and it does not model dodge, parry, haste or crit-driven uptime, or fight execution. It measures single-hit survivability against a fixed profile. After each update, a What's New popup summarises the changes once, and you can reopen the notes anytime with /tml new.
If you want to know whether your tank survives the pull before the pull happens, download Tank Mitigation Lab, run /tml, and let the numbers settle the argument.
