StopForgetting: Keep Every Conversation in World of Warcraft
You had a great roleplay scene last Tuesday. Someone quoted a line you want to use in a story. A guildmate mentioned a name you cannot quite place. Then you log out, and the chat scrolls away forever. That is the problem StopForgetting solves. It quietly records your chat into a clean, local archive, organised by day, so you can return to any conversation whenever you need it.
What StopForgetting Actually Does
At its core, this is a chat archive addon. While recording is enabled, it stores the messages your client receives and sorts them into readable daily logs. Open a date, read the conversation, and toggle channels on or off as you like. Keep scrolling and you move seamlessly into the next or previous recorded day, with clear date headings and your reading position preserved.
The layout is built for long sessions. Consecutive messages from the same speaker share a compact header, which gives a back-and-forth scene more breathing room. A dedicated reading mode hides the sidebars entirely when you want to focus on a single, uninterrupted scene.
Search That Finds the Line You Remember
Search is where StopForgetting earns its name. You can look up player names and message text across your entire archive, then open any result directly in its original conversation context. New matching messages join an open search without resetting where you were reading, so a live scene keeps flowing while you investigate. NPC dialogue is recorded separately and hidden by default, which keeps ambient chatter out of your way until you want it.
Export the Days You Want, in One Copy
The export calendar highlights every date that holds saved messages. Pick individual dates or a whole range, then choose your channels and decide whether to include timestamps, channel names and realm names. Prepare the export, press Ctrl+C once, and paste the entire selection into your text editor. No stitching together export pages, no manual cleanup.
If you would rather skip the manual file handling, the foxygame.net launcher offers a one-click install path for StopForgetting, so the addon lands in the right folder without you digging through zip archives.
Your Archive, Your Rules
- No fixed 10,000-message cap and no automatic deletion.
- Channel visibility and recording are separate controls.
- Old days are deleted only when you select and confirm them.
- Logs stay on your computer. No account, companion app or upload service.
- German UI on German clients; English on every other client.
- Standalone and MIT licensed, with no TRP, Elephant or FIR dependency.
Storage has no hard limit, but larger archives use more memory and take longer to load and save. Very large copy exports also need extra memory. Only messages your client receives while recording is enabled can be saved, and protected chat values cannot be archived.
Version Support and Addon Compatibility
StopForgetting is currently a Retail-only addon, so players on modern World of Warcraft get the full feature set. If you spend your time on Classic, TBC, WotLK, Cataclysm or MoP realms, keep an eye on the project page, because demand for a Classic-compatible build is real and the codebase is open for anyone to adapt. On Retail, it plays nicely alongside most UI addons since it does not hook into roleplay frameworks or chat replacements.
How to Install StopForgetting
If you want to download StopForgetting manually, grab the addon package, extract the folder into your World of Warcraft interface addons directory, and make sure the folder name matches exactly. Restart the client or run a reload, then enable the addon on the character select screen. In game, type /sf or click the minimap book to open the archive. Recording runs even while the archive window is closed. Use /sf status for diagnostics and /sf resetwindow if the window ends up off screen.
One important habit: WoW writes the archive on a normal logout, exit or /reload. An unsaved session can be lost in a crash, so reload after a long scene if you care about it.
Getting Started with StopForgetting for World of Warcraft
Exports use your original WoW character names, so TRP display names are not imported. The addon also does not write TXT files directly, since you copy the text out of WoW and save it in your own editor. Bug reports go faster when you include the addon version, WoW version, client language and reproduction steps, and private chat archives should never appear in a public report.
Created by Alexander-DieAldor under the MIT license, StopForgetting is a focused tool with a clear promise: your conversations stay yours, and they stay findable. Install it, enable recording, and the next unforgettable scene will still be there tomorrow.
