Parley
Group content in World of Warcraft has never been more international. You queue into a dungeon, someone greets the party in Portuguese, another player starts calling targets in Russian, and the healer drops a quick line in German. If you only read English, half the conversation sails past you. Parley is an addon built to fix exactly that problem: it translates incoming chat into your language as the messages arrive, so you can follow the group and answer back in kind.
What Parley Actually Does
Parley watches the channels you care about — whispers, party, raid, guild, say and custom channels — and converts each message into your chosen language the moment it lands. Translation happens offline on your own PC using the same open models Firefox relies on, so there is no account to register and no monthly message cap. If you want sharper output, you can optionally plug in DeepL or Azure for higher-quality results.
A few thoughtful touches separate it from a bare translation tool:
- English text is skipped automatically, so you are not reading your own language twice.
- Gaming shorthand survives intact — terms like tank, LFG, WTS and dungeon names are left alone instead of being mangled.
- Brazilian chat abbreviations such as vc, blz, tbm and kkkk are understood rather than translated literally.
- Alerts fire when someone mentions your name, and whispers get their own conversation view.
- A personal list of names — guildmates, friends — can be excluded from translation entirely.
Replying in Someone Else's Language
Reading is only half the job. Parley also handles your replies: type your answer normally, and the addon translates it, attaches the correct chat command, and copies the finished line so you can paste it straight into chat. It then shows the text translated back into your language, so you can confirm the meaning before you send it. Voice input works too, with speech recognised locally on your machine.
Everything is controlled from an in-game settings window, opened with the slash command /parley or the minimap button. One-click presets like Friends & group, Group only and Social get you running fast, and you can save your own. The overlay even ships with skins matching Classic, Retail, Dragonflight and standard chat-frame styles.
The Companion App and Supported Versions
Here is the part worth understanding before you download Parley. WoW addons cannot reach the internet, so the translation itself is handled by a small Windows companion app. The addon briefly renders each message as a tiny strip of coloured squares in a screen corner; the app reads those pixels and translates the text. It never opens the game process, never touches game memory or files, and never presses keys for you. It behaves like a screen recorder pointed at a few pixels.
Compatibility is broad. Parley runs on Retail, Classic Era, Anniversary, The Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King, Cataclysm and Mists of Pandaria Classic. Anniversary, Mists of Pandaria Classic and Retail are currently in beta, and the developer asks that problems be reported on GitHub. On Retail, Blizzard hides chat from all addons during Mythic+ keys, PvP matches and boss encounters, so Parley simply pauses there and resumes afterwards. Requirements are modest: Windows 10 or 11 and the game running in Windowed (Fullscreen) mode.
If you would rather skip the manual setup, the foxygame.net launcher offers a one-click install for Parley, pulling the matching build for whichever WoW version you play and keeping it current without you touching a file. The launcher's addon catalog also lists Parley alongside its companion app, so both pieces arrive together and stay in sync across patches.
How to Install
Installation is straightforward. Download the Parley installer from its GitHub Releases page — the package includes both the desktop app and the addon — then run it and let it place the addon in your WoW AddOns folder. Launch the game, log in, and type /parley to open the settings window. The first time a new language appears in chat, Parley downloads that language model, roughly 50 MB, once. Useful commands include /parley status, /parley test, /parley preset, /parley all and /parley on or off.
One honest caveat: Blizzard's EULA restricts software that collects information from the game, and Parley's companion app exists precisely to carry chat outside WoW for translation. Blizzard has not reviewed or approved it. The developer considers the risk low but not zero, and suggests testing on an account you would not mind losing if you want to be cautious. Parley is a fan project, unaffiliated with Blizzard Entertainment.
The Bottom Line
For anyone who regularly groups with players from Brazil, Russia, Spain, Germany, France, Japan, China or Korea, Parley removes the language barrier that quietly ruins otherwise good runs. It reads chat as it arrives, preserves the slang that makes WoW chat readable, and helps you reply in a language you do not speak. Weigh the companion app caveat, install it deliberately, and international pick-up groups suddenly become a lot less silent.
