NovaPlates

Nameplates are one of the most information-dense parts of any World of Warcraft interface, and yet the default frames tell you surprisingly little about what your opponent is actually doing. NovaPlates is a free nameplate addon built to close that gap. It keeps plates compact, tracks observed enemy PvP cooldowns above their heads, and gives you an instant read on PvE threat. If you have ever lost a duel because you did not notice a trinket or a defensive going up, this is the addon that fixes that blind spot.

What NovaPlates Actually Does

The core idea behind NovaPlates is observation. When an enemy casts something meaningful, an icon appears above their nameplate and starts counting down. The oldest cast stays on the left, and newer casts join on the right, so you can read a fight like a timeline. Five icons are visible at once, with a +N queue for anything beyond that, and hidden timers keep counting down in the background rather than freezing.

The spell database is genuinely large: 382 ability groups and 1,028 spell IDs, including ranks, racials, and pet abilities when the owner is known. Colored borders separate interrupts, defensives, burst, crowd control, mobility, and trinkets, so you can tell at a glance whether that border means "danger incoming" or "they just burned their escape." Health bars are class-colored once the class is identified, and tracking starts automatically at login or after a reload. A separate indicator can also show your own interrupt cooldown, which is a small quality-of-life touch that many players underestimate.

Threat Tracking for PvE

NovaPlates is not only a PvP tool. The threat indicator uses a simple color language: red means you have aggro, yellow means you are high on threat or close to pulling, and green means the identified enemy is targeting your selected tank. Target your tank and type /np tank, or use /np tank auto to follow raid Main Tank assignments automatically. NPC cast bars are retained as well, though NPC and boss cooldown prediction is not included, so do not expect it to read a raid boss like a player.

Supported Game Versions and Compatibility

Here is the part that matters most before you download NovaPlates: this addon targets the original WoW 3.3.5a client, Interface 30300. That means it is built for the WotLK era, and it is the version you want if you play on a 3.3.5a realm. Modern Retail and Classic clients are not supported, and neither are TBC, Cataclysm, or MoP clients. If you are running a Retail or Classic installation, NovaPlates simply will not load correctly, so check your client version first. Compatibility is narrow by design, which is exactly why the cooldown tracking works as reliably as it does on the legacy client.

If you want a smoother setup path, the foxygame.net launcher keeps NovaPlates and similar addons in one catalog, so installation and version matching happen without manually digging through folders.

How to Install NovaPlates

Installation is the same process as any legacy addon, and it takes about a minute:

  • Extract NovaPlates into World of Warcraft/Interface/AddOns.
  • Check that NovaPlates/NovaPlates.toc sits directly inside AddOns, not in a nested subfolder.
  • Enable the addon on the character selection screen, then log in or reload.
  • Press V to show enemy nameplates if they are hidden.
  • When updating, replace the whole NovaPlates folder, including SpellData.lua.
  • Disable other addons that replace the same nameplates to avoid conflicts.

Commands and Everyday Use

The command list is short and practical. /np compact restores compact sizes, /np tank selects your current target as the tank, /np test toggles a demonstration panel, /np status shows diagnostics, and /np scale 0.9 adjusts overall scale. The /np status output is worth remembering, because it is the first thing you will be asked for if you report a bug.

Timing, Limitations, and Honest Expectations

Cooldowns in NovaPlates are base estimates derived from observed casts, not direct reads of an opponent's spellbook. Talents, glyphs, resets, and server changes can all shift timing, so treat the numbers as informed guesses rather than gospel. Not every consumable or on-use item is included, pet timers require an identified owner, and the legacy client has limited nameplate identification, which means some indicators stay hidden when a unit cannot be matched safely. The addon also does not change maximum nameplate range or click areas. Version 0.3.1 fixed same-faction duel cooldowns disappearing after target changes, and previously observed attackability is now remembered by player GUID and cleared when the duel ends.

The Bottom Line

NovaPlates is completely free to download and use, and it fills a niche that few addons bother with: readable, compact nameplates with observed cooldown tracking on the 3.3.5a client. If you play that version and want better information in duels, arenas, and dungeon pulls, it is worth the five minutes it takes to set up. Report bugs with the spell involved, a screenshot, and your /np status output, and the addon will keep improving.
