HomeTails: Never Place the Same Pet Twice in WoW

HomeTails tracks every pet bed in your WoW home and flags repeated pets as you decorate. A must-have housing addon for World of Warcraft.

HomeTails

Housing in World of Warcraft finally lets you turn a plot into a proper home, and few things make a house feel lived-in like a yard full of companion pets. Since Patch 12.1 you can assign pets to pet beds in your house, but the game never shows you all of them together. Once you have dozens of beds, it is easy to forget which pets are already out and where. HomeTails solves that problem by keeping a list of every pet bed in your home, showing which pet sits on each one, and marking repeats while you decorate.

What HomeTails Actually Does

At its core, HomeTails is a tracking addon for pet beds. Every bed in your house and yard appears in one window, along with its assigned pet, a bed number, and its location. Pet icons are sorted alphabetically, and a search box lets you type a pet name to see right away whether it is already placed. The same box also searches by species and by bed name, which is handy when your collection grows past a few dozen companions. Shift-click a pet to link it in chat, hover a bed in your house to see it light up in the list, and keep an eye on your pet placement budget without opening a second menu.

Smart Filters and Counters

The filter row does most of the heavy lifting. The All tab shows every pet bed, Empty highlights beds with no pet assigned so you can fill the gaps, and Repeated flags the exact same pet placed on more than one bed in orange. A fourth filter, Same species, groups different pets that share a species, such as two Rustyroot Snooters with different custom names. On top of that, HomeTails adds badges to Blizzard's own pet grid when you pick a pet for a bed in Customize Mode: a green 1 for pets placed once, an orange 2, 3 or more for repeats, and a blue number when other pets of the same species are already out. Hovering any icon tells you exactly which beds use that pet or species.

Finding Beds and Keeping Data Fresh

In the Placed Decor list of Advanced Mode, every pet bed shows its number and the pet on it. Click the line and the game selects that bed in your house, so you never have to hunt through rooms manually. HomeTails updates itself as you work: open the Placed Decor list once and it records all your pet beds in a single pass, then notices when you place, remove or change pets while you edit. Your data is saved, which means you can check the list even when you are away from home.

If you prefer a simpler setup, the foxygame.net launcher keeps HomeTails in its addon catalog and installs it with a single click, so your pet bed tracker is ready before you log in. The addon speaks English, Spanish and Portuguese, following your game language automatically or letting you pick one in the options.

How to Install and Get Started

Installation is the same as any other addon: download HomeTails, drop the folder into your World of Warcraft Interface/AddOns directory, and restart the client. HomeTails for World of Warcraft works across Retail, Classic, TBC, WotLK, Cataclysm and MoP, though the pet bed features require the Midnight expansion and Patch 12.1 or later. If you want to know how to install it through a launcher instead, the foxygame.net app handles version compatibility and auto-updates, keeping HomeTails current without manual folder swaps.

Once installed, head into your house and open the House Editor. The HomeTails window opens on its own. Switch to Advanced Mode in the editor's bottom bar, then open the Placed Decor list using the list icon at the top right of the screen. A chat message tells you how many pet beds were found. If you also have beds outside, repeat those steps in your yard. One tip: open the pet picker in Customize Mode once so HomeTails can learn the species of your custom-named pets.

Final Thoughts

HomeTails reads the game's own Placed Decor list because the full list of placed decor cannot be read directly by addons, which is why the first scan needs that list opened. That small quirk aside, the addon turns a fiddly decorating chore into a clean, searchable overview. If you have ever placed the same pet on three beds without noticing, HomeTails is the fix, and it stays out of your way until you need it.
