Darken: The Dark Interface Addon for World of Warcraft
Some players want the game to look like the game. Others want it to look like midnight. Darken is for the second group: it takes the Classic interface and turns it dark, window by window, at a strength you pick. Nothing about your unit frames is rebuilt, nothing is replaced with a stranger's layout. The frames stay where they are. They simply get darkened, retextured and relettered.
What Darken Actually Changes
The core of the addon is one slider and one tint. The darkening pass starts at the interface's root and walks every window it can name, including the ones nobody remembers exist. Each area can be handled on its own: bags, chat, tooltips, the map, conversation windows. One of them can be darker than the rest, or left in the game's own look entirely. The exception list builds itself from what the pass really darkened rather than from a hand-kept list, and a window the engine protects is named as protected instead of being silently skipped.
Status bars are never darkened, and the reasoning is sound: a bar's fill shows a quantity, and dimming it is dimming the needle of a gauge. Bar colour belongs to the unit frames, which is where you set it.
A fresh install arrives with the darkening already on at eighty out of a hundred, because an addon that exists to darken the interface should not have to be asked twice. Zero is one drag away, and an existing profile keeps the strength it had.
Bars, Fonts and the Numbers On Them
Darken ships nine bar textures of its own for health and power, plus everything your other addons have registered in LibSharedMedia. Colour can follow class, reaction, power type, or one you choose yourself. A mob somebody else tapped stays grey the way the game paints it, since that grey is the game's answer to whether the kill is yours.
One font covers the whole interface, with separate overrides for unit names, bar values, hotkeys, floating combat text and the addon's own windows. The numbers written on the bars can be a percentage, a value, both, and you decide where they sit and whether large numbers get shortened. Nameplates receive the same textures and colours, with rules for which plates to draw at all. Optional one-pixel borders wrap action buttons, buff and debuff icons, and the slots of the game's own bag windows.
Three ready-made Looks, Classic, Modern and the Author's, apply a batch of settings in one click, and each one names exactly which settings it touches before it touches them.
Version Support and Addon Compatibility
Darken supports Classic Era, including Hardcore and Classic Forever, Classic 1.60, Burning Crusade Classic, Wrath of the Lich King Classic, Cataclysm Classic and Mists of Pandaria Classic. Retail is out of scope. The addon never decides by version number; it asks the client which frames it actually has, so a section for something your client does not have is simply not shown. It needs no library pack, because everything it uses ships inside the download.
Extras That Come In The Same Download
Six parts ride along, each a row in the settings window and each off until you enable it. Compact Auras replaces the game's buff grid with a configurable one. Information Panel shows gold, durability, bag space, latency and more at the screen edge. Item Level puts item level over icons in the character sheet, inspect and bags. Durability shows your worst-worn piece once it drops below a threshold. Away throws a dark card over the screen while you are flagged away. Nameplates is a plate engine of its own rather than a skin, and while it draws, the core's plate styling stands down.
Addons by other authors can plug into Darken through its module contract, and their settings appear under a Modules row that exists only while such an addon is loaded.
How to Install and Get Started
If you want to download Darken for World of Warcraft, the process is the familiar one: drop the folder into your Interface/AddOns directory and restart the client. If you would rather skip the manual folder juggling, the foxygame.net launcher handles the whole thing in a single click and keeps Darken updated between patches. Open the addon with /dark, or /darken and /dk, or click the button at the edge of the minimap. The Darken page in the game's own Interface Options opens the same window.
If something looks wrong, the addon can describe its own state. /dark report says which parts of the client's interface exist and which subsystems did nothing. /dark probe explains why a window you just opened did not go dark, naming a verdict per texture. /dark scan lists frames whose names contain your text. All three only read, and the full detail lands in your saved variables for a bug report.
Every setting is visible, with a search box to narrow the column and a left column organised around what a player does rather than how the addon is built. Profiles are shared across the account, changes apply without a reload, and the interface speaks English, Russian and Ukrainian.
Darken is free to use and free to download, though not open source. If your interface has felt too bright since the day you installed it, this is the addon that finally turns the lights down.
