BossWatch
Boss frames are one of those things you rarely think about until they fail you mid-pull. Blizzard's default frames get the job done, but they leave little room for personalization, and in a raid environment, that matters more than most players admit. BossWatch is an addon that rips out the default boss target frames and replaces them with something far more flexible, without asking you to rebuild your entire interface from scratch.
What BossWatch Actually Does
At its core, BossWatch swaps Blizzard's boss frames for a custom, fully configurable set. You get up to five frames, each with a portrait, health and power bars, an integrated cast bar, aura tracking, and a target highlight border. Everything is adjustable, from textures and colors to spacing and scale, so the result fits your UI rather than the other way around.
One detail worth appreciating: a single zip covers both retail and MoP Classic through multi-TOC packaging. If you play across multiple clients, you are not juggling separate downloads.
Features That Set It Apart
Frames and Bars
- Up to five custom boss frames with portrait, health, power, and cast bars
- Smooth interpolated health bar animation, with a secret-value taint guard for Midnight bosses
- Absorbs and shields overlay drawn directly over the HP bar
- Target highlight border with optional pulse animation using static, class, or reaction colors
- Raid target icon overlay on each frame, freely positioned
- Three or four block layouts, with the name either overlaid on the HP bar or on its own row
- Off-screen auto-recovery that clamps frames to current UIParent bounds, handy after switching monitors
Cast Bar and Auras
The cast bar shows spell name, icon, and supports a detached layout with its own anchor, width, and offsets. Aura tracking uses the modern API with native Blizzard sort priority, plus a legacy UnitAura fallback for older Classic clients. Filters cover harmful and helpful auras across all, mine, not mine, and boss-only categories, with stack counts, cooldown swipes, and configurable timer placement.
Click Actions and Combat Safety
Shift-click cycles raid markers, Ctrl-click sets focus, and a standard click targets the boss. Secure attributes are applied out of combat, so everything stays combat-safe.
Options Panel and Profiles
The configuration window follows the modern WoW UI style. It uses a tabbed layout with a search bar, where matches across every tab land on a dedicated results page. Sections collapse individually and each carries its own reset button. The window is resizable, and its size and position are saved account-wide.
A per-character profile system supports import and export through clipboard strings, and a toggleable minimap icon keeps quick access within reach. Side tabs on the left edge let you jump between sister addons in the *Watch family, including TankWatch and the in-progress SplitWatch, with seamless window position handoff.
If you would rather skip manual folder management entirely, the foxygame.net launcher handles BossWatch as a one-click install, keeping the addon updated automatically whenever a new release drops.
Supported Game Versions and Compatibility
BossWatch for World of Warcraft targets Retail and MoP Classic directly, with a multi-TOC package that loads the right files for each client. The addon handles WoW Midnight secret-tagged unit values for health, power, cast info, auras, and raid markers on hostile bosses, falling back gracefully instead of spamming Lua errors.
Players on other Classic-era clients such as Classic, TBC, WotLK, and Cataclysm should check the current release notes before installing, since the focus sits on Retail and MoP Classic. On Classic, a banner at the top of the options panel reminds users that the UI has not been fully tested in encounters yet, and bug reports are welcome.
How to Install BossWatch
Using an Addon Manager
The simplest route is to download BossWatch through CurseForge, Wago, WoWUp, or another manager. Search for the addon, install it, and the same zip works on both retail and MoP Classic.
Manual Installation
- Download the latest release and extract the BossWatch folder
- Place it in World of Warcraft/_retail_/Interface/AddOns/ or World of Warcraft/_classic_/Interface/AddOns/
- Restart WoW or run /reload
Slash Commands
- /bossw or /bosswatch — open the options panel
- /bossw mover — toggle the drag handle to reposition the boss container
- /bossw test N — simulate up to five bosses with HP drain, casts, and auras
- /bossw auras [unit] — dump all auras with secret-tagged field detection
- /bossw reset — wipe all settings and reload the UI
Localization and Community
English and French are complete, while German, Spanish, Italian, and Brazilian Portuguese are partially translated. Contributing a locale is straightforward: copy the French file, adjust the locale check, translate the values, and open a pull request. The addon is MIT licensed, so forking and modifying are both fair game.
Final Thoughts
BossWatch solves a narrow problem well. If you raid seriously, the combination of configurable frames, aura filtering, and combat-safe click actions removes friction that default frames quietly create. The profile system and multi-client packaging make it easy to carry the same setup across characters and clients, and the test mode lets you dial everything in before you ever step into a pull.
