SURVIVE! 1.8 [Wasteland Update]
The wasteland just got a whole lot deadlier. SURVIVE! 1.8 [Wasteland Update] transforms The Sims 4 into a brutal post-apocalyptic survival experience where every decision matters. This isn't just a tweak to the existing mod—it's a full-blown overhaul that introduces a Radiation System, deadly new Necros, dangerous illnesses, and gritty realism across the board. If you thought scavenging canned beans was tough before, wait until you're boiling puddle water just to avoid dysentery.
What's New in the Wasteland
The core loop of SURVIVE! has always been about managing hunger, thirst, and the constant threat of the unknown. Version 1.8 cranks that tension to eleven. The streets are emptier, the loot is rarer, and the enemies are smarter—or at least, they're a lot more aggressive. This update is designed for players who want their Sims to earn every single day of survival.
Radiation System: The New Silent Killer
Radiation is everywhere now. A new Lot Challenge called "Radiation" can be applied to any residential lot, setting a randomized radiation level ranging from mild to completely unlivable. If you own the Seasons expansion, you'll also experience deadly radiation storms that force your Sims indoors. Prolonged exposure to the outdoors means your Sims gradually absorb radiation, leading to illness or even death.
The key to surviving radiation is preparation. Build bunkers below ground level—radiation doesn't reach underground, making basements your safest haven. You can also purchase a Geiger Counter from the Junk Trader or cheat it into your inventory via Build/Buy. Radiation suits offer full protection and are available from Longshot the Junk Trader. Want to create your own danger zones? Place Radioactive Barrels from Build/Buy to customize your map's hotspots.
Necros: The New Threat
Radiation doesn't just kill—it mutates. Sims with latent DNA instability (which is randomized per Sim) have a 35% chance of turning into a Necro when exposed to too much radiation. You can enable or disable this trait via the Survive pie menu if you want to control the chaos. Necros are immune to radiation and temperature, don't need to eat or use the bathroom, and have a brand-new motive: Ferality. They also come with unique social interactions like "Recall Mortal Life" and "Worry About Going Feral."
If a Necro's Ferality motive drops to zero, they go fully feral. Feral Necros are barely playable and extremely aggressive. They roam, attack nearby human Sims, and cannot be controlled. They have unique idle animations, are immune to needs decay, and only attack non-Necros. Every 30 Sim minutes, there's a chance they'll trigger an attack, giving you a pop-up to choose your reaction. The outcome is a 50/50 gamble with random consequences. If you have the Extreme Violence mod installed, you can bypass the reaction mechanic and kill Ferals directly.
Illness, Injury, and Dirty Water
Survival isn't just about avoiding bullets and claws—it's about what you put in your body. The new Brainrot illness comes from eating Mystery Meat too often. It's cheap and convenient from Doc the Wasteland Medic, but there's no cure and no mercy once it sets in. Doc's inventory has also expanded to include bandages, band-aids, antiseptic, and extremely rare antibiotics.
Injuries are now a real concern. Sims can get hurt during fights or while scavenging, and untreated wounds can become infected. Treat them with band-aids, bandages, or antiseptic, which you can now scavenge at bars. Water safety is another layer: collect dirty water from puddles (requires Seasons) and boil it on a campfire with wood to prevent dysentery. Necros can drink dirty water without penalty, which is just another reason they're terrifying.
Scavenging Overhaul and New Traders
Scavenging has been expanded significantly. You can now smash furniture for wood and scrap, with fridges and countertops also becoming scavengeable. Different lot types yield unique loot: libraries give books, bars give food and antiseptic, and residential lots give random supplies. Tents are now scavengeable too, and dogs can join you on hunting or scavenging trips. Flour and sugar are now available via scavenging or from Marsh the food trader.
Longshot the Junk Trader has a new stock that includes survivalist contraband from Basemental Drugs and Wicked Whims mods. From Basemental, you can find tobacco seeds, rolling tobacco, dipping tobacco, rolling papers, cigarettes, cigars, a tobacco drying rack, and moonshine. From Wicked Whims, you'll find tampons, pads, and condoms. He also sells radiation suits and hatchable eggs.
Skill Books, Perks, and Walkie-Talkies
Long-term survival requires investment. New skill books and perk traits can be found while scavenging or purchased from the satisfaction store at a high price. Each trait offers distinct benefits: "Survivor's Resilience" avoids injuries and resists infection, "Wasteland Warrior" wins more fights and learns physical skills faster, "Fleet Footed" speeds up scavenging, "Scavenger's Eye" increases loot, and "Lucky Finder" gives you random helpful items daily.
Walkie-talkies are a game-changer. They allow you to contact Sims your Sim knows personally, but only if they're within range. No more magical long-distance calls—your phone is disabled anyway. There's also a new Aspiration called "Survivor's Spirit" that rewards you with the Master Survivor trait, giving you more loot, better odds at breaking down furniture, and a higher win chance against Necros.
Compatibility and Installation
This update supports The Sims 4 base game and integrates with the Seasons expansion for radiation storms and dirty water. It's compatible with the XML Injector by Scumbumbo and Trait.Tracker by MAL22, both of which are required. If you're using the foxygame.net launcher, you can download SURVIVE! 1.8 [Wasteland Update] for The Sims 4 with a single click, and the launcher will handle version compatibility and auto-updates for you. It's a clean way to keep your mod list organized, especially when you're juggling multiple add-ons.
To install, make sure you've read the tutorial documentation thoroughly. The mod is in early release, so there may be occasional Last Exceptions. If you encounter issues, check the OVERRIDES folder and delete packs you don't own. The loading bug from version 1.4 has been fixed, and inherited traits issues are resolved. The world of Chestnut Ridge is now de-simmed, and off-grid fridge cooking is basegame compatible.
The wasteland is harsher than ever, but you've got more tools than ever to survive it. Whether you're building a radiation-proof bunker, training your dog to scavenge, or just trying to keep your Necro from going feral, SURVIVE! 1.8 [Wasteland Update] delivers a deep, punishing, and endlessly replayable survival experience. Download SURVIVE! 1.8 [Wasteland Update] today and see if you have what it takes to thrive in the ruins.
