Parenting & Discipline Extended

In The Sims 4, the Parenting Skill has always felt a bit too exclusive. Only official parents and caregivers could teach, discipline, or ground children, which often left aunts, uncles, grandparents, and close family friends standing idly by. The Parenting & Discipline Extended mod changes that entirely, embracing the philosophy that it truly takes a village to raise a child. This comprehensive add-on opens up parenting and discipline interactions to a much wider circle of Sims, while also adding meaningful trait-based restrictions that make every interaction feel more realistic and strategic.

Who Can Now Parent and Discipline?

Gone are the days when only the household's primary caregivers had authority. With Parenting & Discipline Extended for The Sims 4, any Young Adult, Adult, or Elder Sim can step into a parenting role for Children and younger Sims, regardless of familial ties. This means a beloved neighbor, a distant cousin, or a family friend can now step in to correct behavior or teach valuable life skills. However, the mod keeps a sense of realism: Sims who are not related to the child will have a lower chance of success compared to blood relatives.

Teen and Young Adult Dynamics

Teens also get a significant boost. They can now gain the Parenting Skill and discipline Child Sims who are related to them. Additionally, Teens themselves can be parented and disciplined by family members who are at least one life stage older, including cousins, aunts, uncles, grandparents, and siblings. For Young Adults, the mod allows Parents and Grandparents to parent them in a limited capacity. High-authority parents and grandparents can use the "Force to" interactions, while others must rely on the gentler "Influence to" options. Notably, Young Adult Sims cannot be asked to Clean Up Toys, Do Homework, or Work on School Projects.

Grounding and Skill Progression

Any family member who is a Young Adult or older can now ground Child and Teen Sims, making discipline a family-wide affair. Despite the expanded access, the mod maintains the core progression system. You will still need to level up your Sim's Parenting Skill to unlock all of the different interactions. Nothing about the leveling process has changed, so the mod integrates seamlessly with the existing Parenthood Game Pack mechanics.

Trait-Based Interaction Restrictions

One of the most compelling features of Parenting & Discipline Extended is the nuanced restriction system based on traits, life skills, and childhood phases. This ensures that not every Sim is equally effective or appropriate as a disciplinarian.

  • Help with Needs: Sims with traits like Insensitive, Hates Children, Self-Absorbed, Negative Empathy, Mean Streak (Phase), Mean, or Evil cannot use the "Help with Needs" interaction.
  • Influence vs. Force: Sims with Evil, Mean, Hates Children, Argumentative, Negative Conflict Resolution, or Negative Empathy traits lose access to "Influence to" interactions and can only use the more aggressive "Force to" options. Notably, "Force to" interactions no longer disappear at higher Parenting Skill levels.
  • Teaching Social Skills: Sims with Argumentative, Mean, Evil, Insensitive, Mean Streak (Phase), Negative Empathy, or Negative Conflict Resolution cannot teach children to Say Sorry. Similarly, Mean, Bad Manners, Rebellious (Phase), or Negative Manners traits block teaching Please and Thank You.
  • Household Chores: Lazy, Slob, and Sims with Negative Manners face restrictions when using "Influence to" for chores like Mopping Puddles, Taking Out Trash, Cleaning Up Mess, Cleaning Up Trash, and Washing Dishes. They can still use "Force to," but with a higher chance of failure. Setting the Table is restricted for Lazy Sims and those with Bad Manners, while Slob and Freegan Sims cannot "Influence to" shower but may attempt "Force to" with a greater likelihood of failure.
