Open Apartments
The Sims 4 has always been a game about stories, and some of the best stories happen between neighbors. But for too long, the dreaded loading screen has stood between your Sim and the family next door. That barrier is now a thing of the past with the innovative Open Apartments mod. This groundbreaking add-on transforms how you play with Residential Rentals from the For Rent Expansion Pack, allowing your Sims to walk next door, knock, chat on the couch, and head home—all without a single interruption.
What Does Open Apartments Do?
In the base game, The Sims 4 can only load one lot at a time. Open Apartments cleverly sidesteps this technical limitation for Residential Rentals by saving and instancing a neighboring unit's furniture and Sims on demand. After a simple initial setup, you can click on a neighbor's front door or anywhere inside their unit to get a dialog with two options: Drop By or Travel. Choosing "Drop By" triggers a seamless, no-loading-screen visit where your active Sim walks over and knocks. If anyone aged Child or older is home, the unit loads, an event starts, and a resident greets you and invites you in. From there, you simply play as normal.
Who Is Home When You Visit?
The mod intelligently populates the neighbor's unit based on their daily routines. When you drop by, you can expect to see:
- Sims aged Toddler and up
- Infants in their cribs
- Newborns in their bassinets
- Cats and dogs
However, some residents won't be present. Anyone away at work or school will show up once their shift ends. Currently, horses, farm animals, and small pets are not supported and will be skipped. Neighbors settle into their own routines while you visit, and because your Sims are guests in their space, they are treated like visitors, not residents.
By default, only the Sims you originally chose in the picker to Drop By will freely walk into the neighbor's unit. To allow other household members to enter autonomously, simply direct them into the unit once or have them interact with something inside it. After that, they will come and go freely.
Managing a Drop By Visit
The Drop By is managed by an event, and only one can be active at a time. The event lasts either until you end it manually or until every household resident aged Child or older has left for work or school, at which point it wraps up on its own. To end a Drop By, just end the event; the neighbors will route back to their own units. During an active Drop By, you won't be able to enter Build Mode as a safety precaution. Build Mode unlocks again a few in-game minutes after the Drop By ends, once everything has been cleaned up.
By default, the Sims you're visiting won't wander into your own household's unit. If you'd like to let them in, click your unit's front door and choose "Allow the {Household} to Enter." You can also send them back to their own unit this way without ending the event by selecting "Prevent the {Household} from Entering."
How to Set Up the Mod
Setup is mostly automatic, but the mod needs to capture what's inside a unit before it can recreate it for a Drop By. A unit's data can be captured in several ways:
- Automatically: Whenever a unit is the one currently loaded (like your own home on every save load), the mod captures it.
- By Traveling: Take the normal loading-screen Travel into a neighbor's unit, and it's captured on arrival.
- Manage Worlds Pass: Enter Build Mode on the building from the world map. This loads and captures every unit in the building at once, which is the fastest way to prep a whole building.
Captured data is stored in its own file alongside your save game, so you typically only need to capture a unit once per save file. After that, it updates on its own whenever you make edits to the lot. If you don't have data saved for a particular unit you're trying to visit, the mod will let you know and offer to Travel there the normal way, which captures it for next time.
Compatibility and Installation
This mod is fully compatible with the current versions of The Sims 4, specifically requiring the For Rent Expansion Pack. It is also compatible with Better Apartment & Rental Behaviors by lunar_britney. However, it most likely conflicts with Dimmed Inactive Rentals and Labeled Rental Units by TwistedMexi, as Open Apartments handles those features on its own. The mod does not directly overwrite any game files, making it safe for most players.
To get started, you'll need to download Open Apartments from a trusted mod repository. For the smoothest experience, consider using the foxygame.net launcher, which offers a one-click install for Open Apartments for The Sims 4, ensuring you always have the latest version without manual updates. The launcher's add-on catalog makes it easy to manage your mods and check version compatibility before you install.
Known Limitations and Future Plans
While Open Apartments is a game-changer, it does have some current limitations. Only visits are supported; Break-Ins and Eavesdropping aren't available at this time. Landlord interactions like maintenance requests are untested, so treat them as unsupported. It's also wise to save from Live Mode when you remember to. Saving and exiting straight from the Manage Worlds map is safe, but it can skip the mod's data update. Whenever you edit a Residential Rental, return to Live Mode to keep your captures current.
The developer has ambitious plans for the future, including relationship-aware visits where neighbors on bad terms can refuse to answer the door, and a Sim who misbehaves can get scolded and eventually shown out. There are also plans to expand to Break-Ins and Eavesdropping, add custom neighbor events, and explore if this functionality can be expanded to other lot types.
Final Thoughts
Open Apartments is a must-have mod for any Sims 4 player who loves apartment living and neighborhood storytelling. It eliminates the biggest frustration of Residential Rentals and opens up a world of seamless social interaction. Whether you're popping over for a cup of sugar or just want to spy on the neighbors, this mod delivers an immersive experience that feels like a natural extension of the game. If you're wondering how to install, the process is straightforward: download the mod, place it in your Mods folder, and ensure you have the For Rent pack. With its clever design and active development, Open Apartments is poised to become a staple in every Simmer's mod library.
