Xaero's Missing Icons: Real Radar Sprites for Every Mob
You are exploring a modded world, you glance at your minimap, and half the creatures around you are nothing but anonymous dots. That is exactly the problem Xaero's Missing Icons solves. This resource pack hands Xaero's Minimap proper pixel-art sprites for 217 mobs that the mod's automatic icon system simply cannot draw, turning a screen full of grey blips into a readable, colorful radar.
Why Some Mobs Show Up as Dots
Xaero's automatic icon feature needs a vanilla living-entity renderer and model to generate a mob's icon on the fly. Several popular mods break that assumption, and the result is always the same: a plain dot.
- GeckoLib mobs. These use custom animation systems with no vanilla renderer or model, so the automatic icon fails outright.
- Texture-key-only icon packs. A definition that lists textures but no default entry falls back to the automatic icon for anything it misses, which fails again for GeckoLib creatures.
- Fresh Animations. Entity Model Features replaces vanilla model parts, so Xaero draws the wrong thing or nothing at all.
- Newer texture names. Icon Fresh 1.3 keys chickens, cows, and pigs by 1.21.5 texture names such as temperate variants, but Minecraft 1.21.1 with Vanilla Backport still uses the old names.
- Missing entries. Saddled pigs and striders are not listed in common packs at all.
This pack fills those gaps with 241 hand-made sprites and 217 icon definitions, each one drawn as one texture pixel per sprite pixel in the same style as the well-known Xaero icon packs. Xaero draws the black outline itself, so everything blends into your existing setup.
Which Mobs Are Covered
The roster is broad. Tide contributes all 102 fish, each with its own sprite. Eternal Starlight adds 30 mobs including the Aethersent Golem, Aurora Deer, Ent, and Lunar Monstrosity. Vanilla Minecraft brings 25 entries such as dolphins, guardians, phantoms, and the Creaking from Vanilla Backport. Beyond that you get Clutter's butterflies in 19 colors, Wilder Nature's raccoons and bison, Simply Swords battle standards, AdventureZ golems, Aether's Slider, and dozens more from smaller mods.
Mobs with multiple skins or colors, including Pumpkin Warden, Jellyfish, Llamas, and Ocean Creepers, each get one sprite per variant. Fish and most other creatures use a single sprite for all variants. Players are deliberately excluded, since the separate Nytheria Xaero Icon Fix handles them.
Mods That Must Stay Enabled Below
A handful of definitions reuse sprites from two other packs rather than copying them, so those packs need to remain active underneath this one. Icon Xaero's 1.22 supplies Oddion, Man o' War, Ocean Creeper, and the default and pale Pumpkin Warden sprites. Icon Fresh 1.3 supplies chickens, cows, pigs, and striders. If either pack is missing, only those specific mobs revert to dots; everything else is fully self-contained.
Supported Versions and Requirements
Xaero's Missing Icons targets Minecraft 1.21.1 using resource pack format 34, and it is a client-side resource pack rather than a mod, so it does not need to be installed on a server. You will want Xaero's Minimap 26.5.0 for 1.21.1, and Xaero's World Map will display the same icons since it draws the minimap's radar. The Fresh Animations pack is not required because the sprites are already drawn from those models.
If you would rather skip manual file juggling, the foxygame.net launcher offers a one-click install path for Xaero's Missing Icons, dropping the pack straight into the correct resourcepacks folder and keeping it updated as new mob sprites are added.
How to Install Xaero's Missing Icons
Installation is quick, but pack order matters more than anything else.
- Place the pack zip in your resourcepacks folder, or open it through Options > Resource Packs > Open Pack Folder.
- Enable the pack and drag it to the very top of the active list.
- Keep Icon Xaero's and Icon Fresh enabled below it if you use them.
- Press F3+T to reload resource packs if a mob still shows a dot after reordering.
Xaero reads an icon definition from only the highest resource pack that contains it and never merges packs. If another icon pack sits above this one, its definition wins and the dot returns. That single rule explains almost every "it is not working" report.
Final Thoughts
Xaero's Missing Icons is a focused fix rather than a total overhaul, and that is its strength. It does one job extremely well: making the creatures around you instantly recognizable on the radar. Whether you download Xaero's Missing Icons for a sprawling modpack or a small vanilla-plus world, the difference is immediate. Modpack authors are free to bundle it too, as long as it stays above the other Xaero icon packs in the default resource pack order.
