Unplugged AFK
Every Minecraft server veteran knows the ritual: leave the game running overnight so the crops keep growing, the mob farm keeps churning, and the iron golems keep dropping ingots. It works, but it also means your computer hums away for hours, burning electricity for a task you are not even watching. Unplugged AFK offers a smarter path. This eco-friendly Fabric mod spawns a bot version of your character that holds your spot on the server while you shut your machine down completely.
What Unplugged AFK Actually Does
The premise is refreshingly simple. When you run the unplug command, the mod disconnects your real client and replaces you with an NPC that mirrors your presence. Your farms keep ticking, your chunk loaders stay active, and your friends still see a player standing at the AFK spot. Meanwhile, your PC powers off, your electricity bill stays low, and you avoid the wear and tear of an all-night session.
This is the "go green" angle the mod leans into, and it is more than marketing. A typical gaming rig draws hundreds of watts during idle gameplay. Multiply that across a whole server community, and the savings add up fast.
Supported Versions and Loader
Unplugged AFK is built for the Fabric mod loader, so you will need Fabric API installed alongside it. The mod supports Minecraft 1.19.2 through 26.3, covering a wide span of modern releases. That range matters if you run an older server that has not updated, or if you are on the newest snapshot-adjacent build and want the same convenience.
Player Commands
The core command is straightforward:
- /unplug [<minutes>] [<reason>] — disconnects you and leaves a bot behind, with an optional custom duration and reason
Note that the single-player server owner cannot use this command, since there is no separate server to stay connected to. Server admins with permission level 3 get a much deeper toolkit through /unplugged-admin, including spawn, kick, purge, list, info, and set subcommands for managing bots manually.
Customizable Timeouts and Safety Options
The default timeout sits at 129600 minutes, which works out to a generous 90 days. If that feels excessive, you can dial it down per session or change the default in the config. The unplugged_afk.json file also exposes several protective settings:
- resetHealthUponDeath — restores the bot's health if it dies while you are away
- unpluggedDisableDamage — prevents the bot from taking any damage at all
- unpluggedHidePlayer — makes the bot invisible to other players
- unpluggedHideFromOps — hides it from operators too
- unpluggedAfkEnabled — a master toggle for the entire feature
There is also a server restart behavior worth knowing about. When the server reboots, Unplugged AFK respawns all active bots after a short delay, so a scheduled restart does not wipe out everyone's AFK session.
Messages and Formatting
Server owners can customize broadcast messages extensively, including join notifications, duration displays, and the reason a session ended. The default kick message when someone successfully unplugs reads "Your player will be AFK" with gold formatting. Options like broadcastMessages, hideUnpluggedJoin, and displayDuration let you fine-tune how much noise the mod makes in chat.
How to Install Unplugged AFK
Installation follows the standard Fabric routine. Set up Fabric for your target Minecraft version, drop Fabric API into your mods folder, then place the Unplugged AFK jar alongside it. Restart the server or client, and the commands become available immediately. If you want a faster route, the foxygame.net launcher handles the whole process in a single click, pulling Unplugged AFK straight from its add-on catalog and keeping it updated automatically whenever a new build ships.
When you download Unplugged AFK, double-check that the file matches your server's Minecraft version. A mismatch between the mod and the game build is the most common cause of a failed launch, and Fabric will usually tell you plainly in the log if that is the problem.
Why Server Players Keep It Installed
Unplugged AFK solves a problem that vanilla Minecraft never addressed. AFK farming has always been a trade-off between progress and power consumption, and this mod removes the trade-off entirely. You get the farm output, the server keeps its population count, and your hardware gets a rest.
For small friend groups running a shared world, the admin controls make it painless to manage. For larger communities, the permission levels and config file keep everything under control without constant intervention. Whether you are protecting a delicate redstone setup or just want to sleep without losing a night of crop growth, Unplugged AFK for Minecraft delivers exactly what it promises: presence without the power draw.
