The tenant
Most horror mods in Minecraft throw a monster at you and call it a day. The tenant does something far more unsettling: it makes you feel like a guest in your own world. Something was living here before you arrived. It watched you build your house, it learned where you sleep, and now it would like its home back. This psychological horror experience by buildak is not a mob you can fight. It is a presence, and it is patient.
What Makes The tenant Different
The tenant does not spawn at random, cannot be killed with a sword, and ignores the rules that govern every other creature in the game. An invisible director tracks each player and escalates the tension day after day. It waits for the right moment: when you are alone, when it is dark, when you finally believe you are safe at home. The longer you play in a world, the closer it gets.
The Four Stages of Dread
- Stage I — Presence: Whispers behind your back, footsteps that stop the instant you turn around, torches snuffed out on the floor, and doors standing open that you are certain you closed.
- Stage II — Observation: A motionless figure at the edge of the forest, a head peeking from behind a tree trunk, and knocking on your door at night.
- Stage III — Intrusion: It curls up in a dark corner of your basement, signs reading "this is my house" appear, your chests have been searched, a music box plays somewhere inside, and you may wake to find it leaning over your bed.
- Stage IV — The Hunt: At night it chases you on all fours. Only light can save you. Do not turn around.
Progress is tied to your own time played in the world, so using /time set will not skip the dread. In multiplayer, every player is haunted separately, and hallucinations are only heard by their target.
A Model Unlike Anything Else in Minecraft
Forget cubes. The tenant uses a true organic mesh of roughly 19,000 faces: a protruding ribcage, a visible spine and collarbones, long three-jointed fingers with nails, and teeth. Its jaw genuinely unhinges, tearing open onto a wet throat and two rows of teeth. A 56-bone skeleton with real skinning means elbows, knees, and the jaw bend like skin rather than blocks.
The model is shader-ready with labPBR support, and normal plus specular maps are included. With Iris and a PBR pack such as BSL, Complementary, or SEUS PTGI, its waxy, damp skin catches the light while milky eyes reflect your torch. Even without shaders, those eyes glow faintly in the dark. Animations sell the wrongness: a slow hunched walk with arms hanging far too long, a fast low crawl during hunts, a head that snaps sideways with a crack of bone, and eyes that track you, dart around, and sometimes drift apart.
Sound Design and Jumpscares
More than 60 sounds were synthesized specifically for this project. You will hear breathing right behind you, whispers, and a distorted voice murmuring "I see you." There is knocking at the door, cracking bones, an out-of-tune music box, distant screams, low drones, and a heartbeat that accelerates as it approaches. Jumpscares genuinely hurt: it lunges at the camera, your view locks onto its face, the screen shakes and breaks into static, and your ears ring. If you hit it, it will remember.
Configuration and Operator Commands
Nearly everything is adjustable in config/thetenant.json. The pace option controls how fast stages progress, intensity controls event frequency, and toggles exist for jumpscares, chases, world changes, screen flashes, camera shake, and creative-mode immunity. Jumpscare damage defaults to 6 and is never lethal unless you change it.
Content creators get a full toolkit through operator commands. Use /tenant info to check a player's current stage, /tenant stage to force progression, /tenant trigger to fire specific events like watch, peek, stalk, crouch, behind, chase, jumpscare, bedside, knock, music_box, or i_see_you, and /tenant pause, /tenant resume, /tenant reset, or /tenant reload for full control. Recording and streaming are explicitly allowed and encouraged.
Compatibility and How to Install
The tenant supports Minecraft Java Edition 1.20.1 through 26.3, with a separate file for each version range, including 1.20–1.20.1, 1.20.2–1.20.4, 1.20.5–1.20.6, 1.21–1.21.1, 1.21.2–1.21.3, 1.21.4, 1.21.5, 1.21.6–1.21.8, 1.21.9–1.21.10, 1.21.11, 26.1–26.1.2, 26.2, and 26.3. It requires Fabric Loader and Fabric API. Iris with a labPBR shader pack is recommended but optional.
To get started, download The tenant for Minecraft from the official project page, drop the correct jar for your game version into your mods folder alongside Fabric API, and launch the game through your Fabric profile. If you would rather skip the manual setup, the foxygame.net launcher handles The tenant for Minecraft with a single click, pulling the right build for your installed version and keeping it updated automatically so you never mismatch files. Once installed, the horror begins the moment you load into a world.
Final Thoughts
The tenant is not about fighting a monster; it is about losing the feeling of safety in a game you thought you knew. Its staged escalation, custom model, and original soundscape combine into one of the most effective psychological horror experiences available for Minecraft. If you enjoy dread over jump-scare spam, this mod delivers exactly that. Just remember: it watched you build that house, and it knows where you sleep.
