The Hollower

You leave the mine and seal the door behind you. The tunnel was silent. By morning there are scratches along the frame, your dog refuses to come inside, and something out in the treeline has learned exactly how long you take to sleep. That is the promise of The Hollower, a survival horror mod for Minecraft Java 1.21.4 built on Fabric by ItsR4WR. It does not throw a monster at you on day one. It builds a presence first, then lets that presence decide when to move.

A Stalker That Grows With Your World

The creature at the center of the mod is a hollow, long-limbed hunter whose threat escalates over time. Early signs are almost deniable: a sound behind cover, a pair of eyes at the edge of render distance, a footprint where no mob should walk. As the days accumulate, those distant clues turn into visits, ambushes and full pursuits that can follow you far beyond the cave where you first heard it. Many early encounters end without a single attack, which makes the ones that do land hit considerably harder.

This is a hunter that pays attention. It reacts to both sight and sound, remembers the routes you used to escape, and can single out a player who has wandered away from the group. Movement is shaped by the terrain around it, with procedural foot and body animation, crouching through low passages, handling doors and pulling itself over suitable ledges. Your base is not a safe zone either. Knocks, scratches, a watcher at the window and interrupted sleep turn a familiar shelter into something you start dreading at dusk.

Evidence, Animals and Changing Rhythm

The world itself leaves traces. Dogs, cats, livestock and villagers can all react to the creature's presence, and animal remains, blood trails and a nearby den may reveal where it has been. Encounters shift in rhythm as well. Some are pure observation. Others begin suddenly, continue after an apparent retreat, or let it close the distance while nobody is looking. Light influences the hunt, but later encounters can challenge that rule, and the craftable Hollower Ward only buys temporary protection for a place at a cost that follows you into the next night.

Multiplayer adds its own layer of unease. An isolated player may hear footsteps or mining that their friends genuinely cannot hear, and sometimes a familiar figure is not who you think it is. If you would rather skip the manual setup entirely, the foxygame.net launcher handles The Hollower through a curated add-on catalog, so the correct build lands in your profile without any folder digging.

How to Install The Hollower for Minecraft

Getting started is straightforward once your environment is ready. The mod targets Minecraft Java 1.21.4 and requires Java 21 along with Fabric Loader 0.18.3 or newer. The 1.10.0 release was compiled against Fabric API 0.119.4+1.21.4, so matching that version avoids surprises.

  • Install Fabric Loader 0.18.3 or newer for Minecraft 1.21.4.
  • Download Fabric API for Minecraft 1.21.4 and place it in your mods folder.
  • Add hollower-1.10.0.jar to the same mods folder.
  • Launch Minecraft through the Fabric profile.
  • For multiplayer, install the same Hollower and Fabric API versions on the server and on every client.

A fresh survival world is the best way to discover the mod, though existing worlds work fine. No custom map or resource pack is needed, and shaders remain optional. Iris, Sodium, LambDynamicLights and Complementary Unbound are separate projects and none of them is bundled or required. Note that torch light from a held item is a visual effect from those projects, not a replacement for placed-block lighting in the creature's actual behavior.

Before Your First Encounter

Play in Survival or Adventure on a difficulty above Peaceful, then explore dark places or travel at night. Creative and Spectator players are protected from natural encounters, and there is a brief grace period after joining and after death. Territories are deliberately rare. By default, after 25 accumulated minutes of eligible dark play without a witnessed clue, the director can search outside the usual rare cells, but this is a fallback rather than a guaranteed appearance at the 25-minute mark, since a suitable hidden location still has to exist in loaded terrain. Daylight outdoors, active protection and encounter cooldowns do not count toward that timer.

Settings and Tuning

The mod generates config/hollower.json on first launch. In multiplayer, the server's settings govern gameplay, and valid changes are reread roughly every five seconds at normal server speed. You can adjust rarity, cooldowns, encounter limits and damage, or disable individual haunting behaviors such as homeHaunting, breakLights, grabAndDrag, mimicry, animalsReact and lightDare. Setting automaticEncounters to false also disables automatic haunting events. Block-light extinguishing and physical obstacle damage respect mobGriefing, and haunted visits can still open doors while openDoors is enabled.

Be aware of the content notice: stylized blood and animal remains, loud sounds, sudden scares, temporary darkness and a persistent stalking theme. There is no dedicated setting that removes all blood or animal-remains visuals. Version 1.10.0 ships as a Beta, and reports about unusual terrain, larger modpacks and real multiplayer sessions are welcome, since broad modpack compatibility has not been fully validated. The mod is by ItsR4WR, developed with AI assistance under human direction, and you may include the unmodified mod in modpacks or monetize videos featuring it, while modifications and standalone reuploads require permission. It is not an official Minecraft product and is not approved by or associated with Mojang or Microsoft.

If you want a horror experience that respects your world instead of overwriting it, download The Hollower and give it a few quiet nights. The tension between encounters is the point, and the creature does not need to be on screen every night to be nearby. Play carefully, keep an escape route, and never assume that surviving one visit means you have learned every rule.
