The Forgotten Portal: The Only Way Into the Nether

Every Minecraft world has a moment when the Nether stops being optional. Blaze rods, quartz, ancient debris, nether wart — the entire mid-game economy lives on the other side of a portal frame. The Forgotten Portal rewrites that moment completely. Obsidian no longer opens anything in the Overworld. The only door left is the reinforced deepslate frame waiting at the heart of every ancient city.

What The Forgotten Portal Changes

In vanilla Minecraft, a bucket of lava and a flint and steel are the whole price of admission. This add-on kills that trick. You can still build portals in the Nether, so you will always find your way out, but on the surface the shortcut is gone. The ancient city frame is the way in. Descend into the deep dark, survive whatever guards the place, and light the frame that has been sitting there all along.

There is nothing to build. The structure is already there — twenty blocks wide and seven tall, exactly within what a Nether portal accepts. The mod simply lights it and makes it the only door.

The Nether Becomes a Network

Here is where the design gets clever. Any portal you build down in the Nether drops you at the nearest ancient city, not back where you started. The frame lights itself as you step out, and it stays lit. Dig your portal near where you want to go, and you surface at the city closest to it.

Ancient cities stop being isolated dungeons and become stations on a map you build by playing. The Nether turns into a transit system between them.

Why Reinforced Deepslate

Because you cannot get any. Reinforced deepslate has no drop, not even with Silk Touch, no recipe, and it shrugs off every explosion in the game. The only frame of that material in your entire world is the one Mojang already placed for you. The gate cannot be cheated, because there is nothing to cheat with.

Safe to Add to an Existing World

Nothing you built breaks. Every portal already standing keeps working, keeps its link, and can still be taken down the normal way by breaking its frame. The mod refuses new obsidian portals in the Overworld; it does not go back and undo the ones you made before installing it. The change lands the next time you try to light one.

If you play through a launcher that manages your add-ons, the foxygame.net launcher makes trying The Forgotten Portal painless — it handles the one-click install and keeps the mod updated automatically, so version compatibility never becomes your problem.

Supported Versions and Loaders

The Forgotten Portal for Minecraft targets modern releases, with builds available for Fabric and NeoForge on recent 1.20.x and 1.21.x versions. Because it adds no new blocks, no new items, and no world generation changes, it slots into existing modpacks without conflict.

  • No new blocks or items to learn
  • No world generation changes
  • Existing portals remain untouched
  • Works on Fabric and NeoForge

How to Install

Learning how to install The Forgotten Portal takes about a minute. Drop the mod file into your mods folder alongside Fabric API or the matching NeoForge loader, then launch the game. If you would rather skip manual file management, a launcher with a built-in add-on catalog can search, download The Forgotten Portal, and confirm the correct build for your game version in a single step.

One warning: if you run another mod that redirects return portals, expect the two to argue. Both want to decide where the Nether sends you back, and only one can win.

The Verdict

The Forgotten Portal is not for players who want the Nether as a mid-game shortcut. It is for players who want the Nether to feel like a journey. Everything the dimension holds now sits behind a descent into the deep dark, guarded by sculk and whatever else lurks down there. That is the point. The frame has been waiting in every ancient city all along — this mod just finally gives you a reason to light it.
