The Sophisticated Tab add-on solves this by placing a dedicated tab for every backpack you carry right at the top of your player inventory. No more guessing which backpack is which, no more closing and reopening screens just to switch bags.
What Does Sophisticated Tab Actually Do?
Sophisticated Tab is a small, client-side compatibility addon that bridges Sophisticated Backpacks with the Legendary Tabs navigation strip. Instead of a single generic backpack button, you get one tab per backpack — up to eight at a time. Each tab renders the actual ItemStack icon of that backpack, so dyed, renamed, and upgraded backpacks look visually distinct. Clicking a tab opens that specific backpack, not whichever one happens to be first in your inventory.
The mod discovers backpacks through Sophisticated Backpacks' own PlayerInventoryProvider, meaning it automatically honors Curios slots, Cosmetic Armor, your main inventory, offhand, and chest armor. If a backpack leaves that pool slot, its tab collapses out of the row instantly.
Active-Tab Highlight and Return-to-Inventory Tab
When you open a backpack, its matching tab stays in a highlighted state so you always know which bag you are viewing. This match uses each backpack's NBT-stored UUID, making it stable across slot moves, dye changes, and renames. A separate return-to-inventory tab appears at the top of the Sophisticated Backpack screen, letting you jump back to your player inventory with one click instead of closing and reopening.
Curate Your Tab Strip with Drag-to-Reorder and Right-Click Controls
Carrying several backpacks can make the tab strip feel cluttered. Sophisticated Tab gives you full control. Left-click and hold any backpack tab, then drag it horizontally to a new position. A faded ghost icon follows your cursor, and a small white indicator marks the drop spot. Release to commit — the order persists across restarts.
Right-clicking any backpack tab opens a context menu with Open Backpack, Move Left, Move Right, and Hide This Backpack. The hide action removes the tab from the row immediately, though the backpack itself stays safely in your inventory and remains openable via Sophisticated Backpacks' default B keybind.
Per-World Settings Screen
The gear tab at the end of the row opens a settings screen listing every backpack you are carrying, each with a visibility toggle. You will also see UUIDs the mod has previously encountered but that are not currently in your inventory. Footer buttons let you Reset Order, Reset Hidden, or Clean Unused. There is also a key binding under Options → Controls → Sophisticated Tab → Open Tab Settings (default unbound) so you can open this screen from gameplay without going through your inventory first.
Your tab order and hidden-backpack state are saved per single-player world and per multiplayer server in config/sophisticatedtab/tab_preferences.json. Backpack identity relies on the contents UUID stored in NBT, so your choices survive renaming, dyeing, slot moves, even leaving the backpack in a chest and picking it up days later.
Why You Need This Addon
Legendary Tabs has built-in support for Backpacked and Traveler's Backpack, but not Sophisticated Backpacks. Without Sophisticated Tab, your Sophisticated Backpacks simply do not get a tab. And if you carry several backpacks — different tiers, different colors, one in Curios, one in your main inventory — a single generic tab cannot tell you which is which. This addon fills exactly that gap.
If you only have Sophisticated Backpacks installed without Legendary Tabs, this mod adds nothing on its own. It is designed purely to plug into Legendary Tabs' navigation strip the same way other backpack mods already do, then give you the tools to curate that strip.
Compatibility and Requirements
Sophisticated Tab for Minecraft runs on Minecraft 1.20.1 with Forge 47.x (built against 47.4.20) and requires Java 17. Both Legendary Tabs and Sophisticated Backpacks plus Sophisticated Core are mandatory hard dependencies — the mod will refuse to load with a clear error message if either is missing, rather than crashing on startup.
The mod is fully compatible with Curios and Cosmetic Armor Reworked because backpack lookup uses Sophisticated Backpacks' own PlayerInventoryProvider. It coexists peacefully with other Legendary Tabs addons, using priorities 20–27 for backpack tabs, 10 for the return-to-inventory tab, and 100 for the gear settings tab. The right-click context menu only intercepts clicks on its own backpack tabs, so other tabs keep their default behavior.
How to Install
To download Sophisticated Tab, first install Minecraft Forge for 1.20.1. Then drop these jars into your .minecraft/mods/ folder: legendarytabs, sophisticatedcore, sophisticatedbackpacks, and sophisticatedtab. Launch the game, open your inventory, and the backpack tabs appear at the top. The mod works on single-player, LAN, and dedicated servers — it is client-only, so the server accepts the jar but has no server-side payload.
For Modpack Makers
There is no modpack-side TOML config to ship. The mod auto-creates its preferences JSON on first launch. If that file ever becomes corrupt, it is renamed to tab_preferences.json.broken.<timestamp> and the mod starts fresh — players never lose access to their backpacks, only local preference state. The jar is roughly 64 KB, uses no mixins, no access transformers, and no reflection. It is trivial to audit and ship.

Known Caveats
There is an eight-tab cap. If you carry more than eight visible backpacks, the extras will not get tabs — but they remain openable via the B keybind. The tab list only refreshes when the inventory screen opens, so picking up a new backpack mid-screen requires closing and reopening. Backpacks that have never been opened may briefly lack their NBT UUID, marked with a small asterisk in settings; open them once and they join the configurable pool.
