Sodium Extra for Forge

Sodium makes Minecraft run faster, but it deliberately strips out a long list of video options. Sodium Extra for Forge puts those options back. This unofficial port by the community restores fog control, animation toggles, particle settings, render distance tweaks, an on-screen FPS display, and more, all without touching Sodium's performance gains. If you have ever opened Sodium's video settings and wished there were more switches to flip, this add-on is exactly what you have been missing.

What Sodium Extra for Forge Actually Adds

The base Sodium mod focuses on rendering efficiency, which means it ships with a lean settings screen. Sodium Extra for Forge expands that screen with the controls players ask about most. Everything lives inside Sodium's own video settings menu, so you never have to hunt through separate configuration files or a second options screen.

  • Fog control, including separate toggles for terrain, water, and lava fog
  • Animation toggles for block animations, particles, and other visual effects
  • Particle settings that let you reduce or disable specific particle types
  • Render distance tweaks beyond what vanilla exposes
  • An FPS display and extended FPS readout for the debug screen
  • Additional quality-of-life toggles that Sodium leaves out on purpose

Each option is designed to help you squeeze out more frames on lower-end hardware or fine-tune the look of your world on a high-end rig. Turning off fog alone can noticeably change how far you can see in the Nether or during rain.

Supported Minecraft Versions and Loader

This build targets MinecraftForge 26.2, a version that upstream Sodium Extra does not currently support. That makes it a valuable option for players who prefer the classic Forge loader over NeoForge. It requires both Sodium and Greenlight to be installed, since Sodium Extra for Forge depends on them at runtime. Before you download Sodium Extra for Forge, double-check that your Sodium and Greenlight builds match the same Minecraft version, or the game will fail to launch with a missing dependency error.

Forge vs NeoForge: What Is Different

There are two meaningful differences between this port and the NeoForge build, and both come from Forge shipping upstream SpongePowered Mixin rather than a fork.

Debug Screen Entries

The debug screen entries, including FPS, coordinates, extended FPS, and the light updates warning, are registered directly against vanilla's registry. They work fine, but the light updates warning is not pre-listed in the DEFAULT and PERFORMANCE F3 profiles. That pre-listing is a NeoForge-only API, so Forge users simply will not see it enabled by default.

Mixin Compatibility Level

The mixin compatibility level is lowered from JAVA_25 to JAVA_21, which is the highest level upstream Mixin recognises. This affects only what bytecode is allowed inside mixin classes, not the bytecode that is produced. In practice, you will not notice a difference in gameplay.

If you use the foxygame.net launcher, you can skip the manual dependency hunt entirely, since its add-on catalog lists Sodium Extra for Forge alongside the matching Sodium and Greenlight builds and installs all three in one click. The launcher also handles auto-updates, so when a new Minecraft version drops, your mod set stays compatible without you rebuilding it by hand.

How to Install Sodium Extra for Forge

Getting the mod running takes only a few minutes if you already have a Forge profile set up.

  • Install MinecraftForge 26.2 and create a profile for it in your launcher
  • Place Sodium and Greenlight into your mods folder first
  • Download Sodium Extra for Forge and drop the jar into the same mods folder
  • Launch the game and open Options, then Video Settings
  • Confirm the new toggles appear inside Sodium's settings screen

If the extra options do not show up, the most common cause is a version mismatch between Sodium, Greenlight, and this port. Remove all three, grab fresh copies for your exact Minecraft version, and try again.

A Note on Support

This is not an official build. Please report issues to the port maintainer rather than to FlashyReese, the original Sodium Extra author. Keeping bug reports in the right place helps both projects improve.

Final Thoughts

Sodium Extra for Forge fills a real gap for players who want Sodium's speed without losing control over fog, particles, and on-screen stats. It is a small mod with a big impact on how customizable your Minecraft experience feels, especially on Forge setups where the official build simply is not available. Install it once, tune the toggles to your liking, and enjoy a faster game that finally looks the way you want.
