Shared Pets
Taming a wolf or cat in Minecraft is one of those small victories that makes a world feel like home. But what happens when you build a base with friends? Suddenly everyone wants to pet the dog, and nobody agrees on who actually owns it. Shared Pets solves that problem by letting multiple players co-own the same tamed animal, turning a solo bond into a community affair. No commands, no spreadsheets, just a simple in-game GUI that keeps the whole server on the same page.
What Is Shared Pets for Minecraft?
Shared Pets is a multiplayer-focused add-on that introduces shared ownership for tamed wolves and cats. Instead of a single player hoarding the affection of a loyal companion, you can invite up to five co-owners per pet. Each invited player receives a clickable chat message with [Accept] or [Decline] options, and invitations expire automatically after 60 seconds to keep things tidy. Once someone joins the pack, they can sit or stand the pet just like the original owner.
The mod is fully synced between server and client, and all data is stored directly on the entity using NBT, so there are no extra config files cluttering your world folder. That design choice makes it painless to move worlds or back up a server without losing pet ownership records.
Co-Ownership and Ownership Transfer
The core loop revolves around a single craftable item: the Shared Collar. Combine two leather with four gold ingots, then right-click any tamed wolf or cat while holding it to open the management GUI. From there you can invite co-owners, adjust behavior, or hand the pet over entirely.
Inviting Co-Owners
- Right-click your tamed pet with a Shared Collar
- Invite up to five co-owners per animal
- Invited players confirm through a clickable chat prompt
- Invitations expire after 60 seconds if ignored
- Co-owners can sit or stand the pet at will
Transferring Full Ownership
Sometimes you want to give a pet away completely. Ownership transfer works through the same GUI and requires the target player to be online. They receive an [Accept] or [Decline] prompt in chat. On acceptance, the new owner takes over and the previous co-owner list is reset, giving them a clean slate to build their own circle of trust around the animal.
Wolf Follow Modes and Cat Support
Wolves get special attention because they are the only tamable mob in Minecraft with real combat behavior. Shared Pets adds three configurable follow modes per wolf:
- Owner — follows the main owner, falling back to a co-owner if the owner is offline
- Co-Owner — follows a specific co-owner you select in the GUI
- Auto — follows the nearest owner or co-owner
Wolves also defend every owner and co-owner, and they assist whenever any of them attacks. Crucially, a wolf can never be targeted by its own owners or co-owners, so friendly fire stays exactly where it belongs: nowhere.
Cats receive lighter but still meaningful support. Co-owners can sit or stand them, and cats will follow a co-owner when the main owner is offline. It is a small touch, but it keeps feline companions from staring blankly at a wall while their primary human is away.
If you want to skip the manual file shuffling entirely, the foxygame.net launcher offers a one-click install path that drops Shared Pets straight into a compatible profile, so you can jump from browsing to playing without wrestling with mod folders.
Compatibility and Supported Versions
Shared Pets supports Fabric, Forge, and NeoForge across a wide version range. Fabric covers Minecraft 1.20.1 through 1.20.4, 1.20.5 through 1.20.6, 1.21.1, 1.21.11, and the 26.1 through 26.3.x snapshots. Forge handles 1.20.1 through 1.20.4, while NeoForge covers 1.20.5 through 1.20.6, 1.21.1, 1.21.11, and the 26.x line. The add-on is required on both client and server, since the GUI screens for owner management, co-owner selection, and ownership transfer run client-side.
Translations are included for English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, and Brazilian Portuguese, making it easy to share pets on international servers.
How to Install Shared Pets
Getting started is straightforward. First, confirm your Minecraft version and loader, then download Shared Pets from a trusted source. Place the mod file into your mods folder alongside Fabric API, Forge, or NeoForge as required. Install it on both the client and the server, restart everything, and craft your first Shared Collar. From there, right-click a tamed pet and start inviting friends.
Shared Pets turns a lonely wolf into a server-wide companion. Whether you are running a small survival world or a bustling community server, co-ownership, follow modes, and clean ownership transfers make tamed animals feel like part of the group rather than one player's private trophy.
