Seed Viewer
Every Minecraft player knows the feeling: you type in a seed, hit create, and only then discover your spawn is a tiny island in the middle of an endless ocean. Seed Viewer changes that entirely. This add-on lets you preview the terrain of any seed before you ever commit to a world, turning seed selection from a gamble into a precise science.
Whether you are hunting for a specific biome, testing a worldgen datapack, or just curious what lies beyond the horizon, Seed Viewer for Minecraft gives you a full interactive map right inside the game. It supports modern releases across both Fabric and NeoForge, so most players on current versions can jump straight in without hassle.
What Seed Viewer Actually Does
At its core, Seed Viewer generates a live map of your world's terrain using the same worldgen logic Minecraft itself uses. That means the biomes, noise values, and terrain shapes you see in the preview match what you will actually get in-game. You are not looking at an approximation; you are looking at the real thing.
The add-on works in two places:
- World creation screen: A dedicated Seed Viewer tab appears beside Game, World, and More. Open it and your current seed starts loading immediately. Type a different seed into the field at the top and press enter to preview that one instead.
- In-game: Press the Seed Viewer keybind (default: O, though it is I on 26.2+) to open the map centered on your position. Note that the in-game map only works in singleplayer and will not function on multiplayer servers.
Navigating the Preview Map
The controls are simple and intuitive. Left click and drag to pan across the terrain. Scroll to zoom in and out. A height slider on the right side lets you change the Y level you are viewing, which is invaluable for checking cave systems or surface features at specific elevations.
Click the location button in the bottom right to snap the view back to your player in-game, or to world spawn during world creation. Right clicking anywhere on the in-game map copies a teleport command to that exact position, which is a small but genuinely useful touch.
Map Modes and Noise Views
Beyond standard biome display, the Settings tab offers noise views for temperature, humidity, continentalness, erosion, weirdness, and peaks and valleys. Hovering over any point shows the biome name or exact noise value along with its coordinates. This makes Seed Viewer a genuinely powerful tool for technical players who care about terrain generation mechanics.
Biome Highlighting
The Biomes tab lists every biome that can or cannot currently generate in your dimension. Search for a biome, click it, and the map highlights it while everything else fades to grayscale. It is the fastest way to confirm whether that rare mushroom island is actually reachable.
Worldgen Editor
During world creation only, the Worldgen tab lets you tweak numeric values from your worldgen datapacks and instantly see how those changes ripple through the terrain. A compare button toggles between original and edited results. Importantly, this is preview only. Nothing is written to your world, so you can experiment freely without any risk of breaking anything.
Performance and Compatibility
Seed Viewer includes five preview quality levels ranging from Performance to Max, plus a CPU thread slider, both found in the Settings tab. If you are running heavy worldgen datapacks like Still Life or JJThunder To The Max, lowering the quality level is strongly recommended. If loading feels slow or your CPU spikes, reduce the thread count first.
For modded biomes, the in-game viewer handles everything, while the create-world preview currently supports worldgen datapacks only, with mod compatibility planned. Custom biome colors generate automatically, but you can override them through a biome_colors.json file in a datapack.
If you want the smoothest setup experience, the foxygame.net launcher offers a one-click install for Seed Viewer, pulling the correct build for your Minecraft version automatically so you never have to match files manually.
How to Install Seed Viewer
Getting started is straightforward. First, confirm you are running a supported Minecraft version with Fabric or NeoForge installed. Next, download Seed Viewer from your preferred source and drop the file into your mods folder. Launch the game, and the Seed Viewer tab will appear on the world creation screen. From there, simply type a seed and watch your world take shape before you ever click create.
Final Thoughts
Seed Viewer removes the guesswork from one of Minecraft's most important decisions. Instead of generating world after world hoping for the perfect spawn, you get a clear, detailed preview of exactly what awaits. For builders, speedrunners, and technical players alike, it is one of those add-ons that quickly becomes impossible to play without.
