Sanity: Renewed For TFC

Survival in TerraFirmaCraft already asks a lot of you: clean water, balanced nutrition, proper shelter, and a fire that never quite burns long enough. Sanity: Renewed For TFC adds one more layer that changes how you experience every storm, every dark cave, and every lonely night. This add-on ports the sanity system from Don't Starve into Minecraft 1.21.1 on NeoForge, rebuilt specifically to sit on top of TerraFirmaCraft rather than fight against it.

What Sanity: Renewed For TFC Actually Does

Your sanity is tracked as a simple percentage from 0% to 100%. The lower it drops, the more the world turns against you. Rain, thirst, hunger, extreme temperatures, darkness, and nearby monsters all chip away at your mind. Sleep, good food, a lit firepit, pets, and sane company push it back up. High sanity grants no stat bonuses at all, and that is the point: staying sane simply means avoiding every penalty below, while keeping normal villager trading, animal interaction, and social play intact.

Every value lives in config/sanity_renewed/default.toml. Positive numbers restore sanity, negative numbers drain it. Passive values apply per second, active values trigger per event, and per-dimension overrides are supported through config/sanity_renewed/dimension/*.toml. Creative and spectator players are unaffected entirely.

Passive Drains and Restores

  • Rain or standing in vanilla water, TFC river water, or TFC salt water: -0.2/s. Soaking in a TFC hot spring: +0.2/s, with spring water taking priority.
  • Hunger at food level 8 or below: -0.2/s. TFC thirst at 40% or below: -0.2/s.
  • Extreme temperature above 25°C or below 5°C: -0.15/s, with thresholds fully configurable.
  • Darkness at light level 4 or lower: -0.15/s. Light level 10 or higher: no drain.
  • A visible monster within 8 blocks: -0.1/s, doubled if it is targeting you.
  • A visible TFC animal with familiarity above 0.3 within 8 blocks: +0.05/s. A player above 50% sanity nearby: +0.05/s. A player at or below 50%: -0.12/s.
  • A jukebox playing a pleasant disc within 60 blocks: +0.08/s. Discs 5, 11, and 13: -0.11/s.
  • Lit TFC heat sources such as a firepit, grill, pot, stove, stove pot, or charcoal forge with heat: +0.1/s when visible within 4 blocks.
  • A garland worn on the head: +0.1/s and 8% reduction to all sanity drain, consuming durability every few seconds, faster in rain or water.

Active Events That Matter

Sleeping through the night is the single biggest recovery at +50. Earning an advancement gives +10, and TFC animals mating within 4 blocks grant +2 on a shared cooldown. Eating TFC food restores sanity equal to the sum of all five nutrients multiplied by 0.5, and item tooltips show the exact value, so every meal counts. Taking damage costs -1 per point, while killing an inner entity gives +3 and raises how often future ones appear.

Data pack authors can define food rules in data/<namespace>/sanity/food/*.json using an ingredient item or tag plus a modifier. The base nutrient value is multiplied by every matching rule, and the built-in sanity_renewed:badfoods tag already applies a -0.5 modifier to sandwiches. Configured item exceptions still apply too: rotten flesh, pufferfish, poisonous potato, and spider eye cost -5, while a honey bottle gives +6 and an enchanted golden apple gives +13.

Low Sanity Effects and Inner Entities

The decline is gradual and deliberately unsettling. At 50% the indicator and inner monologue begin to twitch and a heartbeat fades in. At 45% insanity ambience joins. At 40% screen post-processing kicks in with distortion, desaturation, and chromatic aberration, alongside fake footsteps, hallucination sounds, and a blood tendrils overlay while you are losing sanity. Inner entities become visible at 25%, spawn around you at 20%, and at 15% they actively hunt you and can be fought back, preferring the most insane player on the server.

Two threats wait in that fog. The Rotting Stalker has 10 HP, deals 8 damage, and moves fast. The Sneaking Terror has 14 HP, deals 16 damage, and resists knockback. Neither pushes players nor drops experience, but killing one restores sanity. All thresholds and stats are configurable, and a /sanity get command checks your current value alongside /sanity set, /sanity add, and /sanity config reload.

How to Install Sanity: Renewed For TFC

If you want to download Sanity: Renewed For TFC, confirm you are running Minecraft 1.21.1 with NeoForge and TerraFirmaCraft installed first, since this is an add-on and will not load without its parent mod. Drop the jar into your mods folder, launch once to generate the config files, then tune the values to taste before starting a serious world.

Players who prefer a smoother setup can grab Sanity: Renewed For TFC through the foxygame.net launcher, where the add-on catalog keeps compatible builds grouped together and installs everything in a single click. The launcher also handles auto-updates and version compatibility checks, which saves a lot of manual jar juggling when TerraFirmaCraft itself updates.

Sanity: Renewed For TFC is not trying to make Minecraft harder for the sake of it. It reframes the pressures TerraFirmaCraft already creates, turning a warm fire, a full stomach, and a trusted companion into genuine psychological relief. Play carefully, sleep often, and keep the light on.
