Realistic Spiders: Variable Mob Sizes and Nests for Minecraft

Realistic Spiders adds variable mob sizes and spider nests for Minecraft, making every cave encounter unpredictable. Download this Pehkui-based mod today.

Realistic Spiders

Few things in Minecraft are as predictable as a spider. You see one, you know exactly how big it is, how hard it hits, and how much health it has. Realistic Spiders throws that predictability out the window by giving mobs genuine size variation, and the results change the way you explore caves forever.

This mod is an official fork of VMH - Variable Mob Height from version 1.0.6 onward, but it has evolved into its own beast. It keeps the core scaling system while adding nests and dropping the automatic compatibility layer for unrelated mobs. If you have ever wanted a spider encounter that feels genuinely dangerous and unpredictable, this is the add-on you have been waiting for.

What Realistic Spiders Actually Changes

At its heart, the mod uses Pehkui to give mobs a range of sizes instead of a single fixed hitbox. By default, spiders, cave spiders, and silverfish spawn somewhere between 0.3 and 0.4 times their normal size, but every value is configurable. That size difference is not just cosmetic. Attack damage, knockback, health, and other attributes scale along with the mob, and you can fine-tune all of it in the config file.

Because Pehkui is a hard requirement, make sure it is installed before you try to run anything. The mod will not function without it, and loading a world with missing dependencies is a recipe for crashes.

Nests and Jockeys

The feature that separates this fork from VMH is nests. When a nest triggers, a single entity is replaced by two to six entities by default, turning a routine fight into a swarm. Jockeys are disabled out of the box, but the config lets you switch them on if you enjoy chaos.

Every entity modified by the mod exposes NBT values such as rsScale, which means map makers and datapack authors can read a mob's size for loot tables, resource packs, and custom mechanics. If VMH is also installed, Realistic Spiders will use its entity NBT values like vmhScale and override the VMH config only for the entities it manages.

Distribution Types Explained

Size variation is not random noise. The mod uses Gaussian distributions controlled by an integer from 0 to 5, letting you decide whether sizes cluster tightly around the median or spread out toward the extremes.

  • Type 0: Even distribution between minimum and maximum.
  • Type 1: Gaussian based on the mean, trending toward the median.
  • Type 2: Slightly tighter clustering around the median.
  • Type 3: Heavy clustering around the median.
  • Type 4: Very slight clustering around the median.
  • Type 5: Extremely heavy clustering around the median.

For most players, the default settings already feel right. Tinkerers, however, can shape entire ecosystems of tiny, fast spiders or hulking cave spiders that hit like trucks.

Supported Versions and Loaders

Realistic Spiders is built for modern Minecraft releases and ships as a Fabric mod, with Pehkui handling the heavy lifting on the rendering and hitbox side. Before you download Realistic Spiders, double-check that your game version matches the file you are grabbing, since Pehkui must also support that same version.

If you would rather skip the manual file juggling, the foxygame.net launcher bundles Realistic Spiders directly in its add-on catalog, so you can install it alongside Pehkui in a single click and let the launcher handle version matching for you.

How to Install Realistic Spiders

Installing the mod is straightforward once your environment is ready. Follow these steps:

  • Install Fabric Loader for your Minecraft version.
  • Place the Fabric API and Pehkui jar files in your mods folder.
  • Download Realistic Spiders for Minecraft and drop the jar into the same folder.
  • Launch the game once to generate the config file, then close it.
  • Edit the config to adjust size ranges, nests, jockeys, and distribution types.
  • Relaunch and load a world to see the new sizes in action.

One important note: scaling values are applied when an entity spawns. If you change config values after loading a world, mobs that already exist will keep their old values until they despawn or the chunk reloads.

Mods That Pair Well With It

Realistic Spiders plays nicely with Nyf's Spiders, a port of the classic Spiders 2.0 mod, as well as Spiders Produce Webs and Weaker Spiderwebs. Together they create a spider experience that is far more threatening and atmospheric than vanilla.

Whether you want a subtle difficulty bump or a full arachnid overhaul, this mod delivers. Grab Pehkui, download Realistic Spiders, and prepare to fear every dark corner again.
