Dive Into Minecraft Without Drowning: The Simple Diving Gear Mod

Underwater building in vanilla Minecraft can be a real headache. The constant drowning, the painfully slow block-breaking, and the clunky movement make any submerged project a test of patience. Sure, you can brew Water Breathing potions or enchant a helmet with Respiration, but those methods are temporary, expensive, or just plain inconvenient. That’s where the Simple Diving Gear mod comes in—a lightweight, standalone solution that gives you exactly what you need to work underwater without all the hassle.

What Is Simple Diving Gear?

Simple Diving Gear is a mod that adds two full suits of diving armor, each with an optional upgrade. One suit is designed for water, the other for lava. The mod doesn’t clutter your game with dozens of items; it focuses on doing one thing well: making underwater (and under-lava) exploration and construction feel natural and enjoyable. Once you put on the gear, you’ll swim in place effortlessly, break blocks at a normal speed, and, most importantly, breathe freely. Step out of the liquid, and the suit becomes cumbersome—slowing you down and causing mining fatigue—so you’ll only want to wear it when you’re actually diving.

Water Suit and Lava Suit

The water diving suit is crafted using Obsidian Blocks and other materials, while the lava version, introduced in the 1.16.1 update, swaps Obsidian for Netherite Ingots. Both suits work on a tank system reminiscent of Subnautica: you have a limited air or coolant supply that depletes while you’re submerged. When the tank runs dry, you lose water breathing or fire resistance, so you’ll need to surface to refill. An on-screen GUI shows your remaining air time, so you never have to open your inventory to check.

Optional Upgrades

Each suit has one optional upgrade: the water suit can be enhanced with a lighting module, illuminating the dark ocean depths around you. This small addition makes exploring underwater caves or building at night far less frustrating. The lava suit’s upgrade provides a similar benefit in the Nether’s fiery lakes.

How the Magic Happens

The mod works by applying potion effects and enchantments to the player only while they are inside the appropriate liquid. When you step into water wearing the diving suit, you instantly gain Water Breathing, Aqua Affinity (for faster mining), and increased swim speed. Leave the water, and those effects vanish. The same logic applies to the lava suit with Fire Resistance and related buffs. This dynamic system means you never have to micromanage potions or enchantments—just put on the suit and dive in.

Crafting Recipes

Crafting the suits is straightforward. The water diving suit requires Obsidian Blocks, while the lava suit uses Netherite Ingots. Both recipes are simple enough that you won’t need to grind for hours, making the mod accessible in the early-to-mid game. The optional upgrades are crafted separately and applied to the suit in a crafting grid. (Check the in-game recipe book or the mod’s page for exact patterns.)

Changelog Highlights

The mod has evolved significantly since its first release. Here are some key milestones:

  • Version 1.0.0: Initial release with water diving suit and one upgrade.
  • Version 1.1.0: Introduced a Subnautica-style air tank system, fixing breathing mechanics and adding an on-screen air display.
  • Version 5.0.0 (1.16.1): Lava diving armor became fully craftable with Netherite Ingots, complete with a coolant tank.
  • Version 8.0.1 (1.19.2): Community contributions helped update the mod, and language support expanded to include Simplified Chinese, Portuguese, French, Japanese, and Persian.
  • Version 10.0.0 (1.21.1): Updated to the latest Minecraft version, now requiring NeoForge.

The mod is completely open-source, so anyone can tweak or port it. The creator has no plans for a Fabric version, but the code is available for anyone who wants to give it a shot.
