Surviving the Unthinkable: The Cannibalism Mod for Minecraft
Minecraft survival often pushes players to their limits, forcing creative solutions when food runs low and the night closes in. But what if the only remaining source of sustenance was yourself — or the villagers you once traded with? The Cannibalism mod introduces a grim new layer to hunger mechanics, challenging players to make horrific choices in the name of survival. Available for Minecraft versions 1.14 and onward, this mod adds custom tools, unique flesh types, and a terrifying consequence for those who feast too freely on their own kind.
What Does the Cannibalism Mod Add?
At its core, the mod allows players to harvest flesh from themselves and other mobs using a special knife. It also introduces a Wendigo — a monstrous entity that hunts those who descend too deep into cannibalism — along with a leveling system that grants dark powers at a terrible cost. Everything is configurable, so you can tailor the experience to your server’s taste for horror.
The Knife: Your Grim Harvesting Tool
The knife is the centerpiece of this mod. Shift-right-clicking with it while not targeting anything will cause the player to take 2.5 to 3 hearts of damage and drop one piece of their own flesh. Right-clicking on other mobs that normally drop food yields their respective meat, but at a price — each creature takes damage according to a specific scale:
- Cows: 1.25 to 1.5 hearts of damage, dropping beef.
- Chickens: instantly killed, dropping their body as food.
- Pigs: 1.25 to 1.5 hearts of damage.
- Sheep: 1.25 to 1.5 hearts of damage.
- Villagers (requires sneaking): 2.5 to 3 hearts of damage.
- Witches: 2.5 to 3 hearts of damage. Rumors say only the insane would eat a witch’s flesh.
- Zombies: 2.5 to 3 hearts of damage.
- Other players: 2.5 to 3 hearts of damage.
This mechanic turns every living thing into a potential meal, but the real horror begins when you start consuming the flesh you’ve harvested.
Flesh and Its Consequences
Different types of flesh provide varying hunger restoration and side effects. Raw Player Flesh restores 2 hunger points, while Cooked Player Flesh restores 4. The same values apply to Villager Flesh. Witch Flesh, however, cannot be cooked — eating it restores only 2 hunger and inflicts a Harming II potion effect due to its corrupted nature.
If the Wendigo mechanic is enabled in the config, consuming any of these flesh types will grant extra hunger and saturation based on your current Wendigo level, making cannibalism temporarily more rewarding — but dangerously addictive.
The Wendigo: A Cannibal’s Nightmare
Push your cannibalism too far, and the mod summons a Wendigo — a towering creature with 50 hearts and massive knockback resistance. It deals a flat 5 hearts of damage per hit, ignoring armor and potion effects, and launches players into the air. Each player can trigger their own Wendigo spawn once, and by default this mob is disabled; you must turn it on in the config to face this horror.
Wendigo Level Mechanic
Eating Player Flesh, Villager Flesh, or Witch Flesh increases a hidden cannibalism stat. As the level rises, the player gains increasingly powerful buffs — Speed I or II, Strength III, Resistance II, and Absorption (5 hearts) — but also suffers from accelerated hunger drain. At the halfway point toward spawning a Wendigo, the player is hit with a temporary wave of Nausea and Blindness, a warning of the monster to come. When the level reaches its peak, a Wendigo spawns nearby (within about 25 blocks) and the stat resets. Dying also resets the level, but without summoning the creature.
Configuration and Customization
Before diving into the dark depths of cannibalism, you’ll need to add the mod to your game. Many players now turn to modern launchers like foxygame.net, which offers a sleek interface and lets you download mods directly from its menu, eliminating the need to manually place files. Once installed, you can tweak nearly every aspect through the mod’s config file or Forge’s in-game config GUI. By default, using the knife plays the player’s hurt sound, but you can switch it to a Ghast’s scream and adjust the pitch. Blood particle effects can be reduced or disabled entirely by setting the value to zero. The Wendigo and its associated leveling system can be toggled on or off independently.
For server admins, an operator command provides debugging control: /cannibalism <player> prints the current Wendigo level, while /cannibalism set <player> <value> changes it directly. JSON configuration files are available on the mod’s GitHub repository, allowing deep customization of drop tables and mechanics.
Is This Mod for You?
The Cannibalism mod isn’t for everyone. It forces players to weigh the immediate benefits of easy food against the long-term risk of summoning an unstoppable Wendigo. The knife’s self-harm mechanic adds a desperate edge to early-game survival, while the corrupted flesh of witches and villagers introduces moral dilemmas rarely seen in vanilla Minecraft. If you enjoy mods that blend horror, challenge, and unique progression systems, this one deserves a spot in your modpack — just be ready to face the consequences when your hunger drives you too far.
