MineTraits
Most survival mods hand you power for free. MineTraits does something smarter: it makes you earn it. Inspired by the trait systems found in hardcore survival RPGs, this add-on turns character creation into a real decision. Before you ever punch a tree, you choose who your character is going to be, and every choice has a cost or a reward.
If you have ever played a run-based survival game with positive and negative perks, you already understand the core loop here. MineTraits brings that same risk-and-reward tension to Minecraft, and it works surprisingly well with the vanilla progression loop.
How the Trait System Works
When you spawn into a new world, a trait selection screen appears. You start with a pool of points, and every trait you pick either spends those points or adds to them. Strong bonuses like extra melee damage cost points. Detrimental traits like slower movement or fragile gear hand points back to you. The goal is simple: build a character that fits your playstyle while staying within your budget.
Good traits include options like Creeper Resistance for reduced explosion damage, Melee Expert and Sharpshooter for bonus damage, Lucky Miner for a chance at double ore drops, and Swift-Footed for faster movement. Bad traits balance things out. Pyromaniac makes fire instantly lethal, Bottomless Stomach drains hunger faster, and Unlucky Miner can make your ores vanish entirely. Every negative pick funds another positive one, so the system rewards planning rather than grabbing everything shiny.
Client-Side and Server-Side Configuration
MineTraits ships with a TOML config file, and you can edit it to change starting points or disable specific traits entirely. On the client side, this works for singleplayer worlds. On the server side, the server config overrides everything, adjusting points and disabling traits for every player who joins.
Server operators get an extra tool: the /resettraits command. Run it on a player, and the next time they reconnect, the trait selection screen appears again so they can rebuild their character from scratch. That is a clean way to handle respecs without wiping progress.
When you want to disable a trait, use the internal ID listed in parentheses next to each trait name, such as creeper_resistance or swift_footed. Those IDs are what the config file reads, so keep them handy when editing.
Supported Versions and Loaders
MineTraits is built for modern Minecraft releases and runs on both Fabric and NeoForge, covering the versions most players are on right now. Because the mod touches player stats rather than world generation, it stays lightweight and plays nicely alongside most other add-ons in a modpack.
One thing worth knowing: trait selection is per-player, not per-world. That means multiplayer servers can host players running completely different builds at the same time, which adds a nice layer of variety to shared survival worlds.
Installing the Add-On
Getting started is straightforward. Here is the short version of how to install:
- Install Fabric or NeoForge for your Minecraft version.
- Drop the MineTraits jar file into your mods folder.
- Launch the game once so the config file generates.
- Edit the TOML file to adjust points or disable traits if you want.
- Create a new world and pick your traits on the selection screen.
If you would rather skip the manual file shuffling, the foxygame.net launcher handles the whole process in a single click, pulling MineTraits straight from its curated add-on catalog and keeping it updated automatically whenever a new build lands. For players juggling multiple modpacks, that kind of automatic version matching saves a lot of headaches.
Why It Changes the Way You Play
The real appeal of MineTraits is that it makes early game decisions matter long after the first night. A player who stacks combat traits will struggle with exploration. Someone who loads up on utility perks will hit harder in the late game but feel fragile early on. That tension is what keeps runs interesting.
It also pairs naturally with hardcore worlds and challenge playthroughs. Taking Pyromaniac for twelve extra points is a genuine gamble, and one wrong step near lava ends the run. That is exactly the kind of stakes that make survival feel fresh again.
If you want more depth from your character without overhauling the entire game, this add-on delivers it cleanly. Pick your traits, live with the consequences, and see how far your build takes you.
