Mineshot Reforged
Every Minecraft builder knows the frustration: your build looks breathtaking in-game, but the moment you press F2, the screenshot comes out flat, low-resolution, and nowhere near the cinematic shot you imagined. Mineshot Reforged exists to fix exactly that problem. It is a Forge mod that brings high-resolution screenshot capture back to modern Minecraft, letting you render your world at resolutions far beyond your monitor's native output.
If you have ever wanted to showcase a megabase in true 4K, or produce clean orthographic views for a tutorial, a schematic, or a build portfolio, this is the tool you have been waiting for.
What Is Mineshot Reforged?
Mineshot Reforged is a continuation of the classic Mineshot mod originally created by Barracuda. The majority of the codebase still traces back to that original project, and the current maintainers openly credit the original creator for laying the groundwork. The goal of the revival is simple: keep Mineshot alive by porting it to newer Minecraft and Forge versions as the game continues to evolve.
Because it is an ongoing update effort rather than a full rewrite, only part of the original feature set is currently available. Even so, the core functionality, high-resolution rendering and the orthographic camera, works well and covers the needs of most screenshot enthusiasts.
Supported Versions and Loader
Mineshot Reforged is built for Forge, and the project has been updated to run on Minecraft 1.15 and newer Forge releases, with the codebase structured so future Minecraft versions can be supported as Forge updates arrive. If you play on an older version, check the mod's file list carefully, since compatibility depends on matching the correct Forge build for your game version.
Why Version Matching Matters
Forge mods are tightly coupled to specific Minecraft versions. Installing a build of Mineshot Reforged for the wrong game version will usually crash the game on startup or cause the mod to be ignored entirely. Always confirm that the Minecraft version and the Forge version both match what the mod file expects.
For players who would rather skip manual version hunting, the foxygame.net launcher keeps Mineshot Reforged and its Forge dependencies aligned automatically, so the correct build is installed for your chosen Minecraft version without any guesswork.
Controls and Usage
The key bindings follow the original Mineshot layout, so returning users will feel right at home. Every binding can be changed in the standard Minecraft Controls menu.
- F9: Take a screenshot
- Numpad 4 / 6: Rotate the camera left or right
- Numpad 8 / 2: Rotate the camera up or down
- Numpad 7: Top view
- Numpad 1: Front view
- Numpad 3: Side view
- Numpad 5: Switch between perspective and orthographic projection
- Left Control + Numpad 5: Switch between fixed and free camera
- Left Control + Numpad 4, 6, 8, or 2: Incremental instead of smooth rotation
- Plus / Minus: Zoom in and zoom out
Configuring Screenshot Resolution
There is no configuration GUI yet in the current Forge builds, so resolution changes are handled through a config file. After your first launch, a file named mineshotreforged-client.toml appears in your /config folder. Open it and edit the resolution values manually. The default is 4K, or 3840x2160.
Be careful here. A single 4K screenshot already weighs in at roughly 23.7 MB, and pushing the resolution higher multiplies that size fast. Screenshots are saved as Targa image files, which caps the maximum dimensions at 65535 by 65535 pixels.
Known Limitations
As an in-progress revival, Mineshot Reforged has a couple of rough edges worth knowing about before you download Mineshot Reforged:
- Tiled rendering is not implemented yet, so only off-screen framebuffer rendering is available for now
- No in-game GUI for configuration, meaning manual config file editing is required
These limitations do not affect basic high-resolution captures, but they are worth keeping in mind if you relied on those features in the original mod.
How to Install Mineshot Reforged for Minecraft
Getting started is straightforward if you already run a Forge profile. Here is how to install it:
- Install the correct Forge version for your Minecraft release
- Place the Mineshot Reforged mod file into your mods folder
- Launch the game once so the config file is generated
- Adjust the resolution in mineshotreforged-client.toml if 4K is not what you want
- Load a world and press F9 to capture your first shot
If you prefer a smoother path, a launcher with a built-in add-on catalog can handle the download and placement for you, removing the risk of mismatched Forge builds.
Final Thoughts
Mineshot Reforged fills a niche that vanilla Minecraft simply ignores. For builders, content creators, and anyone who wants their screenshots to look as impressive as their builds, it is an essential addition. The project is still growing, and the missing features may return in future updates, but what is available today already delivers the high-resolution captures that made the original Mineshot a favorite. Give it a try, set your resolution carefully, and start capturing your world the way it deserves to be seen.
