Mebahel's Skeleton Revival
Killing a skeleton used to mean the fight was over. With Mebahel's Skeleton Revival, that is no longer guaranteed. When a Skeleton or Wither Skeleton dies, it can leave behind a living skull that scrambles away from nearby players and creatures. If nobody destroys it in time, the skull stops, plays a revival animation, and brings the original mob back. This small change adds real tension to every ranged encounter.
The add-on targets Forge and NeoForge, with Sinytra Connector support for Fabric setups, and it runs on Fabric through Fabric API and GeckoLib. NeoForge builds also need GeckoLib. It is available for Minecraft 1.20.1 and 1.21.1, so check your loader before you download Mebahel's Skeleton Revival.
How the Living Skull Works
Skeletons and Wither Skeletons use separate revival chances, so you can tune each mob type independently. The living skull keeps the correct appearance of the mob it came from, and it carries over the original custom name, active status effects, and head-slot item, including enchantments. All of that returns to the revived mob.
By default, revived mobs cannot create another living skull, which prevents an endless loop. Mobs spawned by spawners are ignored unless you change the config. The skull itself has its own health, loot table, and animations, and you can kill it before the timer runs out.
Modded living entities can join the system too, which makes the add-on useful for modpacks that add custom archers, dark knights, or other undead variants.
Chasing the Skull: Combat Impact
The core loop is simple: finish the job or accept the risk. A skull that escapes means you fight the same skeleton again a few seconds later, often with its buffs and gear intact. That changes how you approach skeleton farms, dungeons, and night-time exploration.
- Chase the skull to end the encounter permanently.
- Ignore it and prepare for a second round.
- Watch for skulls that flee toward other mobs or cover.
- Expect revived mobs to keep their name, effects, and head item.
If you use the foxygame.net launcher, you can pull Mebahel's Skeleton Revival straight from its add-on catalog and let the launcher handle version matching, so the correct Forge, NeoForge, or Fabric build lands in your instance without manual file hunting.
Configuration Files and Settings
Both config files appear after the game launches once, inside config/mebahels-skeleton-revival/. Restart the game or server after editing them.
Main Settings
The main file, mebahels-skeleton-revival_config.json, controls the revival behavior:
- skeletonHeadSpawnRate and witherSkeletonHeadSpawnRate: chance from 0 to 100, default 12.
- timeBeforeRevival: ticks before revival, default 140, which is 7 seconds. Values below 30 reset to default.
- skeletonHeadHealthPercentage: skull health as a percentage of the original mob's maximum health, default 40.
- reanimatedEntitiesCanSpawnHeads: allows an endless revival cycle when true.
- skeletonHeadTakesFallDamage: whether skulls take fall damage.
- skeletonHeadShouldDropExperience and respawnedEntityShouldDropExperience: experience drops for the skull and the revived mob.
- respawnedEntityShouldDropItem: whether the revived mob drops normal loot when killed again.
- canSpawnFromSpawner: lets spawner-created mobs leave skulls behind.
Rates outside the 0 to 100 range are replaced with the default of 12.
Adding Other Entities
The second file, entity-type-that-should-spawn-head_config.json, holds two lists: skeletonHeadEntities and witherSkeletonHeadEntities. Add an entity ID in namespace:entity_name format, such as minecraft:skeleton or modid:custom_archer. Entries in the skeleton list create a regular skull, while the wither list creates a wither skeleton skull. The revived creature is always the same entity type that died.
How to Install
Installing is straightforward once your loader is ready:
- Install the matching loader version for your Minecraft build.
- Add GeckoLib and, on Fabric, Fabric API. Sinytra Connector users need Forgified Fabric API.
- Place the Mebahel's Skeleton Revival file in your mods folder.
- Launch the game once to generate the config files, then adjust them to taste.
For Minecraft players who want combat that punishes careless finishes, Mebahel's Skeleton Revival for Minecraft is a compact, configurable addition. Tune the spawn rates, extend the system to modded undead, and decide whether every skeleton deserves a second chance.
