Insanity Backrooms
If you have ever noclipped out of reality in the wrong spot, you already know where this is going. Insanity Backrooms turns Minecraft into a full Backrooms horror experience: an endless, humming yellow maze that is only the beginning of a whole network of levels, each with its own architecture, atmosphere, music, dangers, and a task you must solve before the exits let you go. It is a fan project by Haecker.3, inspired by the internet folklore that started in 2019, and it plays like a complete game rather than a simple map.
What Awaits You in the Backrooms
The core of the add-on is its scale. You get 35 levels, 9 routes, and 9 endings, connected like a mind map. It starts on Level 0 with its moist carpet and buzzing lights, then pushes you through The HUB, the Garages, Pipe Dreams, the Terror Hotel, the Poolrooms, Level Fun =), the Office Rooms, and the Horror Library, down to the Sewers, the Subway, The Neighborhood, The City That Never Sleeps, the Devil's Mall, the Horror Factory, a Space Station, and many more. Two hidden sub-levels wait for explorers: the Dark Poolrooms beneath the Poolrooms and the M.E.G. Base beneath the City.
The routes branch into a main story, a secondary story, and seven more paths, including Grassrooms, Arcade, Escape, Horror Factory, Hell Run, Baywalk, and M.E.G. Each one leads to its own goal and to one of nine endings, from Escaped the Backrooms to Eternal Darkness.
Every Level Has a Task
Exits stay locked until you finish the job. Notes on the walls tell you what to do. You might open valves until the pool tank is full, pop balloons for the party keys, find the teddy bears in Kitty's house, survive the day/night cycle of The Neighborhood, solve the puzzle in the floating castle and pass the King's trial, or start the old computers in the City. Follow the arrows through the M.E.G. base to the keycard, and much more.
33 Creatures With Their Own Rules
Every creature is sculpted and painted as a detailed 3D model and moves with smooth, procedural animation: real gaits, breathing, looking around, hunting, and attacking. You will meet the Smiler, Bacteria (the cable monster), Hounds, Deathmoths, the Skin Stealer that wears the skin of a player you know, the Clump, Wretches, the giant eye of the Neighborhood Watch, the Animations and their Animated King, SCP-106, SCP-939, and many more.
They follow their own rules. Mannequins only move while nobody is looking. The Librarian hears every running step. The Supervisor kills with its gaze. The Night Nurse is blind but hears you. The Prison Guard never stops his rounds. SCP-939 lures you with stolen voices. Friendly faces exist too: M.E.G. agents give you advice and almond water, and Kitty's cat knows where the teddies are.
Atmosphere, Multiplayer, and Shaders
The mood is handled with care. Own music, ambience, and random scare sounds play for every level, alongside flickering fluorescent lights, a sanity system, loading screens for every level, and cinematic ending screens. Ride the trains through the Subway network, pick a door in The HUB, hide in closets and under beds, and flee through the chase levels Run For Your Life and Level Run. There is even an Arcade with 24 playable cabinets and 56 advancements with their own icons that map your way through the Backrooms.
Multiplayer is fully supported. Travel through the levels as a group, spectate the runners in the chase levels, and help each other with the tasks. The add-on is also built for the IterationT shader pack: every block, item, and creature texture has labPBR normal and specular maps, so wet floors and pool tiles reflect, metal shines, lamps glow, and surfaces have real depth.
If you would rather skip the manual setup, the foxygame.net launcher handles the whole process with a single click, installing Insanity Backrooms and its required shader dependencies in one go so you can start running immediately.
Supported Versions and Requirements
Insanity Backrooms currently targets Minecraft 1.21.8 on the NeoForge loader, version 21.8.31 or newer. You will also need Iris with Sodium and the IterationT 3.2.0 shader pack, since the mod asks you to enable it before you play. If you are unsure whether your setup matches, the foxygame.net launcher checks version compatibility for you and keeps Insanity Backrooms updated automatically, which saves a lot of troubleshooting.
