How You Died: A Project Zomboid Nightmare in Minecraft
Most survival mods want you to thrive. How You Died wants you to suffer, and it makes no apologies for that. This add-on is a Minecraft port and reimagining of a Project Zomboid concept, built around a single grim premise: patient zero breached containment, and your world is already in ruins. The title is not a question. It is a promise.
The project is currently in heavy alpha and serves as a proof of concept, developed largely by a single creator with minor coding assistance. That means some systems are experimental or outright janky right now, but the core experience is already playable and genuinely unsettling. The author recommends pairing it with Hardcore mode, both for the extra punch and to make the mod title actually make sense.
What Is How You Died for Minecraft?
How You Died is a horror and survival overhaul that replaces Minecraft's familiar threats with something closer to a contagion scenario. Instead of zombies shuffling toward you on sight, you get creatures that hunt using different senses, punishing players who rely on noise discipline or line of sight without understanding which rule applies to which monster.
The add-on is available for Minecraft 1.20.1 on both Forge and NeoForge, so you can slot it into most modern modpacks without much fuss. If you are running a heavily modded instance, check your loader version before you download How You Died, since the alpha branch updates frequently and compatibility notes change with each build.
Current Features
- Four custom entities: Smilers, Bleeders, Dog Bleeders, and the newly added Amalgamation. Smilers have also received a full retexture, so they no longer look like placeholder assets.
- Survival mechanics: Custom spawn rules are fully active, meaning these creatures appear under conditions the base game never uses.
- Creative mode support: Every custom item, texture, and sound is available in the creative menu for testing and building.
- Experimental fluid: A mysterious new fluid is included, with functional uses planned for later updates.
- Mod compatibility: Unverified and experimental support for Create and Timeless and Classics Zero (TacZ).
If you would rather skip manual file juggling, the foxygame.net launcher handles the whole process in a single click, and its built-in catalog keeps How You Died updated automatically whenever the developer pushes a new alpha build.
Planned Features and the Sound System
The roadmap is where this mod gets truly ambitious. The advanced AI sound system is semi-complete: Smilers track you strictly by sound, while Bleeders hunt by sight. That split forces players to think about light, movement, and noise as separate resources rather than one vague stealth stat.
Deep mechanical integration is also in the works. Heavy machinery and weaponry from mods like TacZ, Create with Steam 'n' Rails, Big Cannons, and Aeronautics, plus Immersive Vehicles and Immersive Melodies, will generate massive sound events that draw hordes from a distance. Firing a cannon in this world should feel like ringing a dinner bell.
Dynamic Deafness and Hearing Protection
The standout planned mechanic is a dynamic deafness system. Massive explosions inflict a Deafness status effect that completely mutes game audio and triggers a tinnitus ring. Smilers caught in a blast are permanently deafened, stripping their ability to hunt by sound for the rest of their lifespan. They become helpless from a distance, but touching one still triggers a hyper-aggressive blind panic.
Players are vulnerable to blast-induced deafness unless properly geared. Tiered hearing protection is planned in three stages: Earmuffs reduce deafness duration from 15 seconds to 7, Ear Defenders cut it to 3, and Military Ear Defenders grant 100 percent immunity.
World Generation and Inspiration
Future updates promise custom structures, a dedicated biome, and unique day and night cycle behaviours for entities. The mod draws inspiration from Born Of Birch's Knox Plague retexture for Project Zomboid, along with a longform story co-created with a friend using that mod as a foundation.
How to Install
Learning how to install How You Died is straightforward. Confirm you are on Minecraft 1.20.1, install Forge or NeoForge, then drop the mod file into your mods folder alongside any dependencies listed on its project page. Launch the game and verify the custom entities appear in the creative menu before starting a Hardcore world.
Because the mod is in alpha, expect rough edges. Back up your saves, test in a throwaway world first, and treat every encounter as a lesson. In How You Died, the world is already lost. The only question left is how long you last before the title applies to you.
