DayZ Hotbar

Survival players know the feeling: the vanilla Minecraft HUD tells you what you have, but not how dire your situation really is. DayZ Hotbar changes that. This client-side interface mod swaps the standard health bar, hunger bar, and hotbar for a flat, near-black translucent layout modeled directly on DayZ's iconic survival readout. The result is a HUD that feels like part of a survival game rather than a sandbox builder, and it pairs naturally with its sibling mod, DayZ Inventory.

What DayZ Hotbar Changes

The mod rebuilds three separate parts of the interface: the hotbar, the status readout, and the player panel. Each one uses the same restrained palette of grey washes, translucent panels, and single-pixel spacing, so the whole HUD reads as one continuous line across the bottom of the screen.

The Hotbar

Nine slots plus the offhand sit on a single flat row, each box measuring 22x22 pixels with one pixel of clearance between them. There is no backing plate and no outlines. Instead, slot state is communicated entirely through color: a dim wash for empty slots, a lifted wash when holding an item, green for the slot in hand, and red for an item on cooldown. Swapping slots triggers a brief yellow-to-green animation, so changing weapons reads as a deliberate event rather than an instant flip.

The Status Readout

Bottom right, aligned to the same margin as the hotbar, sits a horizontal row of vessel-style icons. Each icon is an outline with a clear gap and an interior that fills from the bottom as the value rises. The readout divides into three sections, separated by a vertical line that only appears when both sides have content:

  • Effects — one mark per family of active potion effect
  • Sustenance — apple for food with saturation overlaid, bottle for water, thermometer for temperature, and bubble for air while submerged
  • Vitals — experience drop with the level number inside, gold cross for absorption, and a cross for health or your mount's health while riding

Health and food follow DayZ's own color bands, which differ from each other. Health turns yellow at 12 or less, red at 6 or less, and flashes below 3. Food is deliberately more forgiving, turning yellow at 3 or less and red at just 1, mirroring how DayZ warns about hunger far later than blood loss. Stacked chevron markers above or below an icon show which direction each stat is trending, with two chevrons indicating a significant change such as a poison tick.

The Player Panel

Anchored in the bottom-left corner, the player panel shows your held item with a DayZ condition dot, a stance figure for walking, sprinting, or crouching, a shield mark, and an armour bar. Active potion effects collapse into a single mark per family, since Minecraft has more than thirty effects and a row that grew per effect would swallow the screen edge.

Supported Versions and Loaders

DayZ Hotbar is available for Minecraft 1.21.1 on Fabric, Forge 52.1.2+, and NeoForge 21.1+, as well as Minecraft 1.20.1 on Fabric and Forge 47.x. There is no NeoForge build for 1.20.1, since that line uses the older overlay-based HUD API. No loader requires an API mod, no Fabric API, and no companion mods on Forge or NeoForge. Each build talks only to its own loader's HUD plumbing. The builds are not interchangeable, so match your file to both your game version and your loader.

If you want the simplest possible setup, the foxygame.net launcher handles the whole process in one click, pulling DayZ Hotbar straight from its add-on catalog and keeping it updated automatically whenever a new build lands.

How to Install DayZ Hotbar

Installation is straightforward once you have the right loader in place.

  • Minecraft 1.21.1 Fabric — install Fabric Loader, then drop the Fabric 1.21.1 jar into your mods folder
  • Minecraft 1.21.1 Forge — install Forge 52.1.2 or newer, then drop the Forge 1.21.1 jar into your mods folder
  • Minecraft 1.21.1 NeoForge — install NeoForge 21.1.x, then drop the NeoForge 1.21.1 jar into your mods folder
  • Minecraft 1.20.1 Fabric — install Fabric Loader for 1.20.1, then drop the Fabric 1.20.1 jar into your mods folder
  • Minecraft 1.20.1 Forge — install Forge 47.x, then drop the Forge 1.20.1 jar into your mods folder

When you download DayZ Hotbar for Minecraft, double-check that the filename matches your exact game version. A 1.20.1 build will not load on 1.21.1, and a Forge build will not run on NeoForge even though the two loaders look similar.

Practical Notes and Tips

The HUD is laid out at a fixed pixel size tuned for Minecraft's default Auto GUI scale. At a large scale the hotbar, player panel, and status readout can crowd together in the middle of the screen, while at a very small scale the icons become hard to read. If either happens, adjust Options, then Video Settings, then GUI Scale.

Vanilla's health, hunger, armour, air, and experience elements are suppressed rather than drawn over, so nothing double-draws. Vanilla visibility rules still apply: the HUD hides behind open screens, in spectator mode, and when you press F1. Note that the attack-strength indicator lived inside the vanilla hotbar, so replacing it removes that element. Set Options, then Video Settings, then Attack Indicator to Crosshair if you want it back. Water and temperature icons currently render as placeholders and will become live readings once a compatible thirst or temperature mod is present.

Every icon is hand-drawn pixel art defined in the mod's own source on a 15x15 grid, so DayZ Hotbar ships no texture files and cannot clash with a resource pack. Licensed under Apache 2.0, it is free to use, modify, and redistribute, including in modpacks and on servers.

Final Thoughts

DayZ Hotbar succeeds because it commits fully to a single aesthetic. The flat washes, the color-banded health and food readouts, the trend chevrons, and the collapsed effect marks all reinforce one idea: survival information should be legible at a glance and never decorative. If you already run DayZ Inventory, this mod completes the look. If you do not, it still stands on its own as one of the cleanest HUD replacements available for modern Minecraft.
