CowboyUp
Riding a horse in Minecraft is one of the fastest ways to travel, but water has always been a frustrating barrier. Dismounting to swim across a river or accidentally plunging into a lake often means losing your steed or watching it sink. The CowboyUp mod changes all that, giving you and your horse the grit to power through water together. True to its name, it is time to toughen up and keep riding.
What Is CowboyUp for Minecraft?
CowboyUp for Minecraft is a Forge-only add-on that introduces three core mechanics: horse swimming with a rider, a stay command when you dismount, and leash retrieval. It is designed to make equestrian travel more seamless and less punishing around water. The mod works entirely client-side, so you can connect to most servers without issues unless the server explicitly denies it. Currently, it supports a wide range of versions: Forge for 1.14.4, 1.15.2, 1.16.4, 1.16.5, 1.17.1, 1.18.1, and 1.18.2. A Fabric version may appear in the future, but for now, Forge is the only loader.
Key Features That Change the Game
Every function in CowboyUp is configurable, letting you tailor the experience to your playstyle. After the first run, a config file is generated where you can tweak timers, toggle features, and even disable the status display. Here is what you get out of the box:
HorseSwimWithRider
The headline feature. When you ride into water, your horse will now swim for a configurable duration instead of immediately bucking you off. The timer is measured in blocks traveled and ticks—every 30 ticks counts as one block. In deep water (more than one block), swimming is slow; in shallow water (one block deep), wading is faster but does not count against the swim timer. You must leave the water entirely to reset the timer, so plan your crossings carefully. If you ride off a cliff into deep water, you will need to dismount briefly so the horse can surface, then remount and ride to shore if time remains.
HorseStaysCommand
Ever dismounted to fight a skeleton only to have your horse wander off? With this feature enabled (default is true), your horse will attempt to stay put when you get off. The mod calls the stay code multiple times to overcome occasional lag, making it reliable in single-player. On servers, results may vary, and logging out and back in can reset the behavior, but it is a huge quality-of-life improvement.
ReturnLeash
Leads have a habit of snapping and flying into the distance. CowboyUp can automatically return a broken leash to your inventory if possible, saving you the headache of crafting a new one. This is also configurable, so you can turn it off if you prefer the vanilla challenge.
How to Install CowboyUp
Learning how to install CowboyUp is straightforward. Since it is a Forge mod, you need to have Minecraft Forge installed for your chosen version. Once Forge is set up, simply download CowboyUp from a trusted mod repository and place the .jar file into your mods folder. Launch the game with the Forge profile, and the mod will activate automatically. The default keybinds are Multiply (numpad *) to toggle horse swimming, Divide (numpad /) for the stay command, and Subtract (numpad -) to retrieve a leash. You can always rebind these in the controls menu.
If you are using the foxygame.net launcher, the process becomes even simpler. Its built-in add-on catalog includes CowboyUp, so you can install it with a single click and let the launcher handle version compatibility automatically. This is a great way to keep the mod updated without manually tracking files.
Configuring the Mod to Your Liking
After the first launch, a config file appears in your Minecraft directory. You can adjust the swim time, enable or disable any feature, and even turn off the status messages that appear on screen. The developer has plans to add a custom in-game config window in the future, which would reduce the need for multiple keybinds. For now, editing the text file is quick and easy.
Future Goals and Current Limitations
CowboyUp is actively evolving. The creator has outlined several exciting goals: a hobble or stake to tether a horse to a specific spot, possibly by name, and a fix to prevent dismounting in water from resetting the swim timer. There is also a known quirk where the stay command may not always hold on servers, but the modder is investigating improvements. Despite these minor rough edges, the core functionality works smoothly and adds a layer of realism and convenience that horse lovers have wanted for years.
Why You Should Download CowboyUp Today
If you rely on horses for exploration or simply hate the panic of a water encounter, download CowboyUp and transform your rides. The mod respects vanilla balance by making swimming a limited resource, so you still need to plan routes, but it removes the arbitrary frustration of instant dismounts. Whether you are crossing a swamp in 1.16.5 or galloping through a mesa in 1.18.2, your horse becomes a true partner. The leash retrieval and stay command are thoughtful extras that round out the package. For Forge players, this is a must-have utility that fits seamlessly into any modpack. Saddle up, hit the water, and cowboy up.
