Modular Pipes: A Fresh Take on Item Transportation in Minecraft

If you have ever tangled with traditional item pipes in Minecraft, you know the struggle: ticking tile entities everywhere, lag spikes when networks grow large, and items disappearing into unloaded chunks. The Modular Pipes mod aims to rewrite that story completely. Still in its early days, this project brings a completely new architecture to pipe networks, separating item logic from the blocks themselves. The result is a lightweight, server-friendly system that could change how we think about automation.

What Is Modular Pipes?

Modular Pipes is a tech mod currently in heavy development. It was originally uploaded as part of a ModOff event, and the creator is honest about its state: right now, the mod does not do much functional item movement. The core framework, however, is already fascinating. Instead of relying on ticking tile entities for every pipe segment, the mod shifts item transportation into a dedicated class that operates outside the block grid. Pipe connections and network nodes are cached in a complex internal diagram, so the game does not recalculate routes for every single item. This design philosophy puts server performance first while still planning beautiful client-side rendering, including visible items zipping through pipes.

Current Development Status

Let us be upfront: the mod is in a pre-alpha stage. The developer warns that until version 0.1.x arrives, you should download and test at your own risk. Many features are not yet implemented, and the pipes do not yet transport items in a playable way. However, the building blocks are in place, and the mod already shows off its unique pipe hierarchy and module system. If you enjoy tinkering with experimental mods, this one is worth watching closely.

How the Pipe System Works

Unlike conventional mods where every pipe block is a tile entity that ticks and processes items, Modular Pipes splits responsibilities. Basic Pipes are simple node-linking blocks that are not tile entities and do not tick at all. They exist purely to form the physical network. Modular Pipes, on the other hand, serve as intersection nodes and module hosts. They store and tick modules but do not handle item movement themselves. The actual transportation logic lives in a separate, centralized handler that does not depend directly on any block. This means item routing can theoretically continue even across unloaded chunks, though the developer plans to make that behavior configurable.

Pipe Types and Their Roles

Understanding the pipe hierarchy is key to planning a network. Here is what each pipe does in the current design:

  • Basic Pipe (Gray) – A simple linking pipe that cannot form intersections. It is the most fundamental building block, connecting nodes without any extra logic.
  • Basic Pipe (Golden) – Identical to the gray variant in function, but items traveling through it move twice as fast. This speed boost is inherent and does not require modules.
  • Modular Pipe, Tier 0 – A node pipe meant to be placed at pipe intersections. It has no module slots, serving purely as a junction point.
  • Modular Pipe, Tiers 1–6 – These node pipes gain one module slot per tier. Tier 1 has one slot, Tier 2 has two, and so on up to six slots at Tier 6.
  • Modular Pipe, Tier 7 – The apex node pipe. It offers six module slots like Tier 6, but also applies a permanent 10x speed boost to any item passing through it.

Modules: The Brains of the Operation

Modules are what give Modular Pipes their name. They attach to the node pipes and define how the network behaves at that point. Currently, two modules are planned, with more on the way:

  • Extract Module – Every 20 ticks (once per second), this module pulls one item from an attached inventory and pushes it into the pipe network. It is the basic input mechanism.
  • Network Block Items Module – A directional filter that prevents items from moving through the pipe from a specific side. You can configure its mode to Block Incoming, Block Outgoing, or Block All traffic relative to the attached face.

The developer promises additional modules in the future, likely covering fluid transport, filtering, and more advanced routing logic. Because modules are the only ticking components, the performance footprint stays minimal even as networks expand.

Getting the Mod and Trying It Out

Since Modular Pipes is still in its infancy, you will not find it on major mod platforms with a stable release yet. Many players who enjoy testing cutting-edge mods like this prefer to use a dedicated launcher that simplifies the process. For instance, the foxygame.net launcher lets you browse and install experimental mods right from its menu, making it a convenient, flexible, and modern tool for keeping your modded instance organized. Once the mod reaches a more complete state, you can expect it to appear in standard modpack distributions. For now, you can grab the early build directly from its ModOff submission page, but remember to back up your worlds and proceed with caution.

Performance and Server Considerations

The entire mod is built around one central idea: be easy on servers without sacrificing visual appeal. By removing ticking tile entities from basic pipes, caching node connections, and handling transportation in a non-block-dependent class, the mod avoids the common lag spikes that plague large pipe networks. The ability to configure whether items can move through unloaded chunks adds another layer of control for server administrators. When item rendering is eventually added, the visual feedback will still be there, but the heavy lifting stays behind the scenes. This approach could set a new standard for tech mods that prioritize multiplayer performance.

What the Future Holds

Right now, Modular Pipes is a promise more than a product. The developer has shown a clear vision: a modular, server-optimized pipe system that grows smarter with every tier and module. As fluid support, additional modules, and item rendering come online, this mod could become a staple in automation-focused packs. The unique separation of logic from blocks also opens the door for creative addons and compatibility with other mods. If you are a fan of tinkering with new mechanics and appreciate mods that respect server performance, keep an eye on this one. The journey from a ModOff entry to a fully functional transport network is just beginning, and the foundation already looks rock solid.
