Chest-Tracker

Minecraft worlds grow. Bases sprawl, storage rooms multiply, and somewhere in a forgotten corner of a cave lies the diamond you swore you put in a safe place. Opening every chest to find it is a chore that ruins the flow of the game. Chest-Tracker solves this problem at the root by reading your world files directly, building a searchable index of every container without you ever needing to open it.

This add-on is a proactive replacement for older tracker mods that only remembered containers after you physically interacted with them. Chest-Tracker scans the entire world from disk, including chunks that are not currently loaded, giving you a complete picture of where your items are stored. It supports Minecraft 1.21.11 and 26.2, with both versions built from a single source tree. The mod runs on the Fabric loader and requires Fabric API as a dependency. Mod Menu is optional but recommended, as it provides a convenient settings screen for all the configuration options.

How Chest-Tracker Indexes Your World

The core of Chest-Tracker is a background scanner that reads region files straight off the disk. This means it does not rely on your render distance or what is currently loaded in memory. The scanner is incredibly efficient because it remembers each region file by its size and timestamp. On a second scan, it reads almost nothing, as it only processes files that have actually changed. If you quit the game mid-scan, it resumes exactly where it stopped, saving you valuable time.

The radius is configurable, allowing you to balance scan speed against coverage. For most players, the default settings provide a comprehensive index of their entire world without any noticeable performance impact.

Intelligent Filtering and Search

Chest-Tracker does more than just list items. It classifies containers by their origin. Natural loot chests found in villages, temples, and strongholds are separated from chests that players have placed. You can filter your search results to show only player-built storage or only generated loot, depending on what you are looking for.

The search functionality handles nested storage gracefully. A diamond tucked inside a shulker box inside a barrel will still appear in your search results. The item panel even tells you how many of your total items are sealed inside other containers, so you know exactly where to look.

Every Container Type Supported

One of the standout features of Chest-Tracker is its support for every container type in the game. You can toggle each one individually in the configuration. The list includes:

  • Chests and barrels
  • Shulker boxes
  • Ender chests
  • Hoppers, droppers, and dispensers
  • Furnaces and brewing stands
  • Crafter blocks

When you break a chest, or when a creeper does it for you, the container is removed from the index immediately. Any containers broken while the mod was not running are cleaned up on the next scan, ensuring your index stays accurate.

Using Chest-Tracker in Game

Two keybinds are added under the ChestTracker heading in the Controls menu. The default key opens the search screen, while the Z key searches for whatever your cursor is hovering over without opening anything. On non-QWERTY keyboards, the second bind is placed where Z sits on a US layout, so you may want to rebind it to a more convenient key.

In the search screen, items appear in a chest-shaped grid, sorted with the most plentiful first. Left-clicking an item outlines every container holding it and closes the screen. Right-clicking shows a list of locations, nearest first, with distances. Holding shift over an item reveals a detail panel with totals, container counts, and how many items are sealed inside shulker boxes. Buttons along the bottom switch dimensions, showing only those that actually contain items, plus your ender chest when it is not empty.

Visual Markers and Tracking

Once you find something, Chest-Tracker marks it in the world. A box appears on each container, with a trail of marks rising from it so you can spot it across a busy base. The nearest container is highlighted in a second colour. Containers that are past your render distance are drawn at the horizon, so you know the general direction to head. When you arrive and open the chest, the slot holding your item pulses. If the item is inside a shulker box, the shulker pulses first, then the item once you open it.

All of these visual features are configurable through Mod Menu, including the marker colours and trail intensity.

Installation and Compatibility

To get started, you need to know how to install the mod. The process is straightforward: drop the jar file for your Minecraft version into the mods/ folder. Fabric API is required, and Mod Menu is optional. The mod id is chest-tracker, which is deliberately different from the original mod's chesttracker to avoid conflicts. If you are upgrading from a build that used the id chestindex, delete that jar first, as both would load simultaneously otherwise.

For those looking to download Chest-Tracker, the latest releases are published to GitHub Releases. The mod supports Minecraft 1.21.11 and 26.2, both built from one source tree via Stonecutter. Building requires JDK 25 or newer, as Loom validates the Gradle JVM. The per-target compile toolchain is provisioned automatically, emitting bytecode at the appropriate level for each version.

When you are ready to get the mod, consider using the foxygame.net launcher. It offers a one-click install for Chest-Tracker for Minecraft, handling version compatibility automatically so you do not have to worry about mismatched jars. The launcher also includes an add-on catalog where you can browse and install mods directly, and it keeps your installed mods up to date with auto-updates, ensuring you always have the latest fixes and features.

Server Support and Permissions

Chest-Tracker works in several multiplayer configurations. In singleplayer and on LAN hosts, you get full functionality: container locations, contents, and unloaded chunk scanning all work perfectly. On a server with Chest-Tracker installed, container locations and contents are available, with contents being permission-gated. Unloaded chunks are also indexed.

On a vanilla server with no mod installed, the mod currently indexes nothing. Minecraft never sends container contents to clients, only block positions. The mod detects this situation and displays "No index here yet" rather than appearing broken. Mapping container locations from loaded chunks is a client-side feature that does not exist yet, but the server side is useful on its own. The /chesttracker find <item> command works from a vanilla client with no mod installed.

Server operators can control access with the /chesttracker access <tier> command, which takes effect immediately. The tiers are ALL, OWNED, and OP. The ALL tier lets everyone search and see everything. The OWNED tier lets everyone search, but only see containers they placed themselves, while operators still see everything. The OP tier restricts searching to operators only. A full index is effectively loot x-ray, so choose your tier carefully. The tier applies to every player arriving over a connection, including LAN guests. A host playing their own world is never gated.

Commands and Maintenance

Several commands are available for managing the index:

  • /chesttracker scanworld - Reads region files that changed since the last scan
  • /chesttracker scanworld override - Throws away the index and reads the whole world again
  • /chesttracker scanworld cancel - Stops a running scan, keeping what was read
  • /chesttracker stats - Shows container counts, origins, and scan progress
  • /chesttracker find <item> - Tells you where an item is, in chat
  • /chesttracker access [tier] - Shows or sets who may search

Use the override command when the index looks wrong rather than merely incomplete. An ordinary scan corrects and adds but never removes something it does not encounter. The index lives in the world folder at <world>/data/chest-tracker/, alongside a plain-text record of which region files have been read. Deleting that record makes the next scan read everything again, while deleting the folder starts from nothing.

Chest-Tracker transforms how you manage your inventory across a sprawling world. No more guessing which chest holds your enchanted gear or where you stashed that stack of netherite ingots. The index is fast, accurate, and respects your time. Download Chest-Tracker today and reclaim the hours you used to spend digging through boxes.
