Chest DNA
Every Minecraft player knows the feeling. You crack open a dungeon chest, grab a stack of enchanted gear and some golden apples, and then you move on. The loot has no story. It came from nowhere, and it means nothing. Chest DNA fixes that. This add-on records where every single item came from and displays that history directly in the item's tooltip. The moment an item is created—whether it is looted from a chest, dropped by a mob, bought from a villager, fished up, crafted, smelted, or mined—Chest DNA attaches a permanent origin stamp to it.
What Information Does Chest DNA Record?
This isn't just a simple "found in a chest" tag. The add-on tracks a rich set of data for every item you pick up. The stamp contains the source, such as a village, dungeon, End City, or ancient city. It also logs the specific loot table it rolled from or the entity that dropped it. You will see the biome and dimension, the exact coordinates of the spot, and the structure it was found inside when there is one. Finally, it records who obtained it by name.
This data is stored as a real data component. That means it survives world saves, shulker boxes, ender chests, and multiplayer sessions. It is also fully readable by commands, datapacks, and other mods, making it a powerful tool for custom gameplay.
Visualizing the DNA: A Pixel-Art Masterpiece
When you hover over an item, Chest DNA draws a pixel-art card underneath the normal tooltip. It is drawn one pixel at a time with no textures, so it stays crisp at every GUI scale. The source name sits on top, with a tier stamped underneath. The frame color changes based on rarity. A grey frame indicates a village chest, while a gold frame with shimmering pixels crawling around the border signals an End City, an ancient city, or an ominous vault. An animated DNA helix runs down the left edge for a stylish touch.
By default, you get a one-glance view. Hold Shift to see the biome, dimension, and coordinates. Finder IDs are only shown with advanced tooltips (F3+H), just like vanilla mechanics. The card sizes itself against the screen, wrapping long values so it never grows wider or taller than it has to, and it reports its real size to keep the tooltip on screen at all times.
Every Source You Can Imagine
Chest DNA recognizes a massive range of origins, grouped into four main categories. There are 36 origin types in total, each with its own name, glyph, and rarity tier.
Structure Chests
- Village, dungeon, mineshaft, stronghold
- Nether fortress, bastion, End City, ancient city
- Woodland mansion, trial chambers, ominous vaults
- Shipwreck, buried treasure, desert pyramid, jungle temple
- Igloo, ruined portal, pillager outpost, ocean ruins, bonus chest
Creatures and Player Actions
- Mob drops, boss drops, shearing, cat and sniffer gifts
- Hero of the village rewards
- Crafting, smelting, villager and wandering trader trades
- Fishing, archaeology, creative menu items
- Mining every block you break
Does It Get in the Way?
Absolutely not. Stacking is unchanged. Two items that differ only in their DNA still stack exactly like vanilla, so a looted cobblestone will not fragment your inventory. The first source wins; an item is stamped once when it is created and never overwritten. The mod is cheap to run, with one component write per generated item. The structure lookup is skipped for mined blocks, so breaking blocks costs nothing measurable. Every source group can be turned off, along with coordinates, biome, structure, and player name if you prefer not to record that data.
Commands and Mod Author API
Players can use two simple commands. /chestdna inspect prints the full DNA of the item in your hand, while /chestdna clear wipes the DNA of the held item (gamemaster permission required). For mod authors, the whole system is an open API. You can register your own origin types with custom glyphs, colors, and tiers. You can claim your own loot tables or override what Chest DNA says about vanilla ones. You can rewrite or veto a stamp before it is written, listen for stamps, add lines to the card, or replace its theme entirely. A chestdna entrypoint ensures your add-on loads at the right moment.
If you are looking to expand your setup, the foxygame.net launcher offers a one-click install for Chest DNA, alongside a curated add-on catalog that makes managing your mods effortless. It is a convenient way to keep your Minecraft experience fresh without the hassle of manual file management.
Minecraft Versions and Loaders
Chest DNA supports Minecraft 1.7.10 through 26.2, covering a wide range of versions. It installs on either side and never blocks a connection. The server does the recording, and the client does the drawing, so what you get depends on where it is installed.
Setup Scenarios
- Singleplayer: Everything works; the integrated server records.
- Client and Server: Everything works.
- Client only (server without the mod): You can join normally. Tested against a plain vanilla 26.2 dedicated server, the client connects and plays with no errors. Nothing is recorded though, because recording is server side, so no cards appear.
- Server only: Origins are recorded and /chestdna inspect works. Players need the mod to see the cards, so keep it optional for them or hand it out.
How to Install Chest DNA
Installing the add-on is straightforward. To download Chest DNA, visit the official mod page for your preferred loader. The mod is optional on the client and optional on the server, but it is useful on both. If you want the full experience with tooltip cards, ensure the client has the mod. If you want the server to record origins, install it there too. For the most seamless experience, the foxygame.net launcher handles version compatibility and auto-updates for Chest DNA, so you never have to worry about mismatched builds. For a manual install, simply drop the jar file into your mods folder and launch the game.
Once installed, you will never look at loot the same way again. Every sword, every apple, and every block of cobblestone will carry its own story. Chest DNA brings a new layer of depth to the game, turning mundane inventory management into a fascinating exploration of where your items have been.
