CampfireOverhaul+

Vanilla campfires in Minecraft look cozy, but most players eventually ignore them. They cook food slowly, offer only four slots, and demand three logs plus coal just to craft. CampfireOverhaul+ changes all of that. This community port of ZanderMeister's original Campfire Overhaul transforms the humble campfire into a genuine survival utility, complete with new mechanics, recipes, and a surprising amount of depth for such a small block.

What CampfireOverhaul+ Changes

The core idea behind CampfireOverhaul+ for Minecraft is simple: make campfires worth placing. Instead of a decorative smoker that costs a crafting table to build, you get a functional wilderness tool that fits naturally into early-game survival and long-term base building alike.

New Crafting Recipe

Both normal and soul campfires can now be crafted in a 2x2 grid, no crafting table required. A normal campfire needs two logs and two sticks, while a soul campfire takes one log, one soul soil or soul sand, and two sticks. This makes campfires viable from the very first night, when you are still punching trees and hiding from skeletons.

Expanded Campfire Recipes

Cooking food is no longer the only option. CampfireOverhaul+ adds several new recipes that run directly on the campfire, all working four items at a time:

  • Burn logs into charcoal without a furnace
  • Craft torches from sticks
  • Dry wet sponges back into usable dry sponges
  • Bake clay into bricks

None of these recipes consume fuel in the traditional sense, which makes campfires a fantastic early-game alternative before you have coal or a reliable furnace setup.

Unlit Placement and Two-Flint Ignition

By default, campfires now appear unlit when placed. You can light them the vanilla way with flint and steel, flaming arrows, or fire charges, or use the new two-flint ignition mechanic. Hold flint in your main hand, flint in your offhand, and right-click the unlit campfire. There is a one-in-three chance of success by default, and both the chance and the mechanic itself are configurable. This only works on campfires, not on regular blocks, so it stays balanced.

Campfire Lifetime and Refueling

The biggest change is the fuel lifetime system. Campfires now burn out when their fuel runs out. To refuel, simply throw any burnable item onto the fire. Vanilla fuels work, most modded fuels work, and even a lava bucket works, returning the empty bucket afterward. Fuel items provide the same burn time they would in a furnace, and a configurable multiplier lets you stretch or shorten those times.

Right-clicking with Dragon's Breath makes a campfire burn forever, while right-clicking with an empty hand tells you the remaining fuel in seconds. Soul campfires have infinite lifetime by default, giving them a distinct identity. World-generated campfires in villages also burn forever by default, and burnout behavior can be set to either extinguish the fire or break the block entirely.

Configuration and Compatibility

Every major feature of CampfireOverhaul+ is configurable through a server config file located at saves/[world_name]/serverconfig/campfire_overhaul-server.toml. You can adjust starting fuel, maximum fuel, infinite lifetime overrides, fuel multipliers, two-flint ignition chances, and worldgen campfire behavior.

Compatibility is solid. Healing Campfire, No Hostiles Around Campfire, Colored Campfire Smoke, Campful, Endergetic Expansion, and Infernal Expansion all work as expected. Any mod that modifies campfires should remain compatible, though Campful and Endergetic Expansion replace certain recipes and drops.

How to Install CampfireOverhaul+

If you are wondering how to install this add-on, the process is straightforward. CampfireOverhaul+ for Minecraft currently supports 1.20.x, with 1.20.1 tested and working, and 1.21.x ports are in progress. It requires Forge 47.x and Java 17 or higher, and it has no dependencies.

For players who want a smoother setup, the foxygame.net launcher handles the entire process in a single click, pulling CampfireOverhaul+ from its curated add-on catalog and keeping it updated automatically whenever a new build drops. That removes the usual guesswork around matching mod versions to your game version.

Manual installation follows the standard Forge routine: download the correct jar for your Minecraft version, drop it into the mods folder, and launch the game. If something breaks, report it on the GitHub repository with your Forge version, a list of other mods, and the latest.log file from .minecraft/logs.

Final Thoughts

CampfireOverhaul+ takes one of Minecraft's most overlooked blocks and gives it a real purpose. Between cheaper crafting, expanded recipes, fuel management, and configurable ignition, campfires finally feel like something worth carrying into the wilderness. Whether you are building a starter hut or a sprawling survival base, this add-on earns its place in your mod list.
