Puddle Pups
Surviving the wilds of ARK: Survival Ascended just got a lot cuter and considerably more dangerous for your enemies. Puddle Pups introduces a pack of six elemental companion puppies that follow you everywhere, fight beside you, and each bring a genuinely useful skill to your daily grind. No DLC required, no complicated taming minigame, just glowing ink puddles waiting to be found.
What Are Puddle Pups?
Puddle Pups are elemental companion creatures that bond to a single survivor. Instead of knocking out a wild dino and shoving meat into its mouth, you collect glowing ink from a puddle in the wild and reanimate a pup from a jar. Each pup has a distinct element, personality, and combat role. Your pack holds one of each kind, so building the full set is a long-term goal rather than a single afternoon project.
The roster includes Ember, who breathes fire and carries a compact forge in her inventory while easing your hunger. Rime breathes frost, keeps your food fresh, and eases your thirst. Balm supports you and the pack with a healing aura and strikes enemies with twin torpor vine whips. Bramble launches a fan of thorns and inflicts bleeding bites. Ranger fires a green laser and tracks the strongest wild creature of any species you point at, with his cone turning red when you drift off the trail. Puddlemane is the rare one, riding on your shoulder and zapping enemies before transforming into a rideable electric Beast.
Finding Ink Puddles in the Wild
Each pup's ink puddle appears in its own kind of place. Ember shows up around mountains, volcanoes, and deserts. Rime prefers the snow. Balm favors beaches and grasslands. Bramble lurks in jungles, redwoods, and swamps. Ranger patrols plains and mountains. Puddlemane's black puddle can appear in any of those locations, but it is roughly ten times rarer. The puddle itself displays the pup's level, and higher levels are rarer, so a lucky find can save you a lot of bonding time.
How to Install Puddle Pups for ARK: Survival Ascended
Getting started is straightforward. If you want to download Puddle Pups and jump straight into the pack life, the process mirrors most add-ons for the game.
- Open your mod browser or launcher and search for Puddle Pups.
- Subscribe or add the mod to your active list.
- Enable it in your single-player session or server cluster.
- Restart the game so the assets load correctly.
- Verify your game version is current, since Puddle Pups supports the latest ARK: Survival Ascended builds and mod compatibility depends on staying updated.
If you prefer a smoother route, the foxygame.net launcher handles the entire process with a single click, dropping Puddle Pups directly into your active mod list and keeping every dependency aligned automatically. It is a convenient option for players who run multiple add-ons and do not want to babysit load orders.
Starting Your First Pup
Find a glowing ink puddle in the wild, look at it, and press E to collect the ink into a jar. Next, craft a Puddle Reanimator at level 20 in your own inventory using 40 metal ingots, 30 crystal, 20 cementing paste, and 40 hide. Place the jar inside, then pick Reanimate on its wheel. The pup bonds to you. Use the jar to wake your pup, then craft the Puddle Whistle to command your pack.
One important note: there is currently a bug involving the Reanimator, so you may need to spawn pups in yourself or wait for an update. Modding is also down until the 5.8 update, so plan accordingly.
Pack Bonds and Combat Roles
Use a pup's wheel to Join Pack. Bonds grow the longer your pack stays together and make your pups stronger. If a pack pup falls in battle, it does not die permanently. It melts back into its Ink Jar and can be woken again after the ink settles, which takes 15 minutes by default or four times faster inside a powered Reanimator. The Reanimator can also Unbond a jar so you can hand a pup to a friend.
Controller users get a full command suite. With the whistle equipped, RB cycles to the next pup, LB goes to the previous one, LT aims, and RT triggers the active pup's special, with a hold-and-release for Ember's and Rime's breath attacks. The whistle wheel offers PUPS selection by name, Formation options like Follow Line, On Point, Halt, and Regroup, plus Leave Pack, Auto Skills, Ranger tracking, and the Puddlemane transform.
Riding the Electric Beast
When Puddlemane transforms, jump once normally, then press jump again in the air for a lightning comet launch that throws you high up and forward. LT is a lightning rush that knocks enemies back. RT bites, and in the air after a boost it bursts forward. R3 on controller, or C on keyboard, unleashes a lightning nova that damages and throws back everything around him on a three second cooldown. Boosts, rushes, and the nova all consume stamina, so manage it carefully.
Server Settings and Customization
Server owners can fine-tune the experience through GameUserSettings.ini under the [DarkPuddlesPups] section. Options include PuddleSeconds for jar settle time, ReanimatorSpeed for faster settling, BondXPPerLevel and BondMaxLevel for progression pacing, BondPercentPerLevel for bonus health and damage, PackBonusPercent for pack synergy, and GuardSeconds for how long the pack holds its guard ring after the last hit. Leave a line out to keep the default.
More pups, additional server settings, and new moves for the Beast are planned for the first update. For now, Puddle Pups delivers a charming, surprisingly deep companion system that rewards exploration and long-term bonding. Grab a jar, find a puddle, and let the pack grow.
