Assorted Traits Mod Guide for ARK Survival Ascended

Assorted Traits

ARK: Survival Ascended is a game defined by its chaos, unpredictability, and the constant drive to tame, breed, and conquer. But what if your dinosaurs could be more than just powerful? What if they could shrug off lava, summon lightning, or even cheat death itself? That is the promise of the Assorted Traits mod, a rapidly expanding add-on that injects a thrilling layer of RPG-style depth into every creature you encounter. This guide will walk you through everything you need to know about this transformative mod, from its core features to installation and future potential.

What is Assorted Traits for ARK: Survival Ascended?

At its core, Assorted Traits is a creature and item enhancement mod. It introduces a system of nearly 40 unique, procedurally generated traits that can appear on wild dinosaurs, items, and even your own tamed companions. These aren't simple stat boosts; they are game-changing abilities that can completely alter your strategy. Imagine a Rex that is immune to fire, a Pteranodon that moves at triple speed but deals no damage, or a Velonasaur that shoots elemental spines. The mod thrives on discovery, making every single tame a potential jackpot or a fascinating new challenge.

The mod is designed for crossplay compatibility, ensuring that players on different platforms can enjoy the new mechanics together. It is important to note that this is an early development mod, meaning the trait list is constantly growing. The developers are actively adding new abilities and refining existing ones, so expect frequent updates and balance shifts. For the most current list of traits and to ask questions, joining the official Discord community is highly recommended.

Key Traits and Their Impact on Gameplay

The sheer variety of traits is the mod's biggest strength. They are broadly categorized into Offensive, Defensive, and Utility roles, allowing for deep specialization. Here is a breakdown of some of the most impactful traits you can find:

Offensive Powerhouses

• Stormweaver: This is the showstopper. Replaces a creature's basic attacks with devastating lightning strikes, similar to an eel's shock. It is incredibly rare, making it a prized find for any survivor.
• Celestial: Attacks from this creature inflict a "lightpet" debuff on enemies, weakening them for follow-up attacks.
• Igneous: Sets enemies on fire for a percentage of the original hit damage. Perfect for a DoT (Damage over Time) build.
• Hangry: A creature that deals more damage the hungrier it is. This creates a unique risk-reward loop for managing your mount's food stat.
• Shredder: Applies a stackable bleed effect similar to a Deinonychus, but less potent. Excellent for sustained DPS against tanky foes.

Defensive and Survival Traits

• Bulwark: A true tank. Takes substantially less damage but deals less and attacks slower. Perfect for soaking up aggro in a group.
• Wraithborne: Gives your creature a set number of extra lives (3/6/9). A literal second chance that can save you from a catastrophic loss.
• Cloaked: The creature becomes untargetable by enemies when its health drops below a certain threshold, allowing it to escape a fight.
• Flametouched: Grants complete immunity to fire, lava, and burning effects. A must-have for any survivor planning to raid a volcano base.
• Thickblooded: Reduces the duration of bleed effects and gives a chance to resist them entirely.

Utility and Movement Specialists

• Toothless: A fascinating trade-off. The creature deals no damage, but gains triple movement speed and stamina. This turns any dino into a rapid-transit vehicle.
• Hopper: Increases jump height by up to 3x, allowing for traversal of terrain that would normally be impossible.
• Forager: Herbivores only. This trait makes them incredibly efficient at gathering organic materials from plants and corpses.
• Escape Artist: Grants immunity to webs and similar trapping effects, preventing your mount from being locked down.

Beyond these, there are species-specific traits like Kumiho for Veilwyns (more clones), Draconic for Drakelings (elemental damage), and Cryotic for Snow Owls and Managarmr (ice damage and immunity). The level of detail and thematic fitting for each creature is impressive.

Item Traits and Special Abilities

Assorted Traits doesn't stop at creatures. The mod also introduces item traits that can be found on weapons and gear. These are not just passive buffs; they are active abilities. For example, you might find a sword with a Flame Strike ability or a gun that can call down a Lightning Bolt. There are even item traits for Static Surge and Thunder Dome, adding a spell-casting element to your arsenal. These powerful items are rare, but they offer a significant tactical advantage in both PvE and PvP scenarios.

How to Install and Get Started

Getting started with the mod is straightforward. You can download Assorted Traits directly from the Steam Workshop or the mod database for your platform. For a streamlined experience, the foxygame.net launcher offers a one-click install for Assorted Traits for ARK: Survival Ascended, automatically handling version compatibility and updates so you can jump straight into the action without fussing over mod files. Its add-on catalog makes managing your entire mod list simple and efficient.

For manual installation, the process is the same as any other ARK mod. Subscribe to the mod on the Workshop, then ensure it is enabled in your server's mod list. The mod also supports some basic INI configuration, allowing server admins to disable specific traits or adjust their global spawn weights. For example, to disable the Razorback trait, you would add [AssortedTraits_AT_Razorback] and Disabled=true to your GameUserSettings.ini file.

Debugging and Testing with Script Commands

For single-player testing or server admin debugging, the mod includes a suite of useful script commands. You can use cheat ScriptCommand AT_AddGeneToTarget -Gene=AT_Toothless[0] to add a specific trait to a creature you are looking at, and AT_RemoveGeneFromTarget to remove it. There is also AT_ListAllAbilities to see all registered traits and AT_DebugAbility to inspect the full JSON data of a specific ability. These tools are invaluable for understanding how traits work and for creating custom scenarios.

Future Plans and Community

The mod is in active development, with the creator promising more weapon and item traits in the near future. There are also plans for in-game configuration options, which will make adjusting the mod's settings much more user-friendly. The drop rate for "trait capsules" from wild dinos is intentionally low, but this makes finding them a special occasion. The community is active and helpful, so if you have questions or want to share your coolest trait finds, joining the Discord is the best way to stay informed and connected.

Assorted Traits is more than just a stat booster; it is a complete overhaul of how you perceive and interact with the creatures of the Ark. It encourages experimentation, rewards exploration, and adds a layer of excitement to every tame. Whether you are a solo player looking for a unique companion or a server admin wanting to spice up the gameplay for your community, this mod is an excellent addition to any modded ARK: Survival Ascended experience. With regular updates on the horizon, there has never been a better time to dive in and see what kind of legendary creatures you can discover.
